DS 7.5 SP1 HF5 Tasks not running in preboot environment (waiting for the agent to get the task)

Jan 13, 2015 12:18 PM

If you are experiencing issues with the Deployment Solution Tasks  in DS 7.5 SP1 HF5,

please run the checks below:

1 - Check IIS folders on Site Server:

Is the PS app present?

Is the Deployment app present?

Compare with the picture below:

If the Deployment app is not present, please install the deployment app as from instructions at article below:

 - On your Site server browse to this location  "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Package Delivery\{76D113DE-16D4-4A31-826F-A4DACCEAC8AB}\cache"

 - Under that location you will find the .bat file Install_DS_PS_Component.bat

 - Open a command prompt window as ADMIN and drag and drop the Install_DS_PS_Component.bat file

 - If you are experiencing an error as "Microsoft VBScript runtime error:path not found" please see link below:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/ds-75-sp1-hfxx-issue-installing-dsps-component-site-server-microsoft-vbscript-runtime-error-pa

2 - Check the Site Server plug-ins

Are they all installed?

Are they all up to date?

Compare with picture below (the ones in red are all needed when using DS 7.5 SP1 HF5):

93.jpg

As reference, see at link below the list of plug-ins needed on the NS, Site Servers, and Clients to use Deployment Solution

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO42229

and the HF5 plug-ins versions at page 10 of the release notes:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7954

If the Deployment Task Server Handler plug-in is missing, it may be because the \cache folder is missing at location:

\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery\{B5786691-3E11-4FCB-9F18-831EEB5C778C}\

If missing: log a case with support or run the corresponding .msi located at

C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Package Delivery\{B5786691-3E11-4FCB-9F18-831EEB5C778C}\cache

with command prompt running as Admin:

>msiexec.exe /i Symantec_DeploymentSolutionTaskServerHandler_7_5_x64.msi skipaim=1

3 - If DS tasks are not running ONLY for "unknown" machines, then have a look at the TECHNOTE below:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH227363

4 - Check for corruption on \deployment .ddls:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/ds-75-sp1-pectagentexe-crashing-or-waiting-agent-get-task-after-upgrade-sp1-hf3-sp1-hf4-sp1-hf

I am seeing this same problem in 7.6. I checked all of the suggestions above, and I still cannot capture an image of a Win 10 system. The sysprep process runs correctly, the system reboots to automation folder and PE 5 loads. At that point, the system will just sit there. Ghost never starts to capture the image. I tried the process with a Win 7 machine and we have the same problem. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Isn't 7.5.1 supported through 10/7/2020 ? Why aren't we getting a 7.5.1 HotFix for this?

Any plans for a 7.5 Hotfix?

So will this be fixed in a hotfix or can we get a confirmation it was fixed in 7.6?

I have a question, I'm hoping someone can answer.  We can initial deploy 4-5 desktop machines and then it will hang in automation on the 5 or 6 machine after the image is selected.  Giving a maintenance window cannot be found error.  We tried first just restarting PXE and TFTP but that did not resolve it.  After a few different restart combinations, we found that it was iis which was causing the hang up.  Running and iisreset and bringing the machine back into automation after deleting it from the console has resolved the issue.  It's not as if we can't image any machines it's just after so many it stops responding.  With doing the iisreset what could be causing this to hang up?  We are running 7.5 SP 1 HF 4.  I have not installed HF 5 as of yet.

The cause for the \cache folder/s missing is being investigated.

See technote relating to HF install/upgrade issue:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH228110

Note: ignore reference to SP1 HF6

Stepping through this article I see I have the exact problem (on HF4): "If the Deployment Task Server Handler plug-in is missing, it may be because the \cache folder is missing at location:"

What causes this and how to I prevent it in the future? I do see it is tied to "Deployment Task Server Components (x64) - Install", but I  have this enabled. Is this a run once ASAP issue or something?
