I was really shocked when I learned that EMC Documentum (Content Management solution) does not allow you to put itself into "online backup mode".

As we used Documentum with an Oracle database, and your content storage and DB should be backed up at the same time to ensure the consistency.

But the problem of implementaion of "hot backup" is obvious: we have to freeze the DB with metadata prior to backup of the filesystem. So what is the solution?

The key is here: perform regular Oracle hot backup and start fs backup from a notification script. This can lead to discrepancies between your content storage and metadata, but your Documentum admin will be able to delete all unnecessary files which were appeared after the DB backup.

If your folder with the content storage is too big, think about usage of snapshots for backup, like a flashbackup or similar technology

There is another solution out there that can help. It’s called CYA SmartRecovery, and it enables you to perform synchronized (simultaneous) backups of the Documentum content store and database – while Documentum remains online. This ensures that when the information is recovered, it’s in its original, consistent state.

The solution works seamlessly with traditional enterprise solutions such as Symantec Veritas NetBackup, and performs backups as often as every 15 minutes to reduce data loss windows. As an added bonus, it provides granular recovery functionality that enables you to quickly recover one, several, or thousands of objects back into the repository, in their original states, with no Documentum downtime. You can find more information on how the product helps with hot Documentum backup at www.cya.com.

Hi,

Is CYA HotBackup or SmartRecovery integrated with netbackup to perform hot online backup of EMC Documentum or it is an independent tool to make hot backup of documentum.

Currently I'm using netbackup 7.1 to perform server backup but client is putting emphasis on making backup through cya hotbackup, so would that be integrated with netbackup to make online backup.

sachdev,

CYA SmartRecovery is a stand-alone application that performs independent backups of the Documentum environment.  It is designed to provide two main benefits: the ability to recovery from logical or granular loss scenarios - such as an end user deletion, an administrative mistake, or any other form of corruption/loss - and also reduce your data loss window in the event of a disaster to less than 15 minutes by closing the gap between your last system backup and the time of loss.  There is no system downtime required for CYA SmartRecovery captures or logical recoveries.

CYA HOTBackup does integrate directly with NetBackup, working with your existing backup infrastructure and the Documentum system to provide consistency between the backups of each Documentum server, without the need to take the system offline to achieve this.  CYA HOTBackup does not output independent or proprietary backups; rather, the output is a consistent set of NetBackup backups of each of the components of the Documentum environment.

With the upcoming release of CYA SmartRecovery v.6.0, that product can now also interface directly with NetBackup, allowing you to write your CYA SmartRecovery Capture Sets directly to your existing NetBackup pools, and allowing you to leverage de-duplication between your SmartRecovery Capture Sets and your existing NetBackup/HOTBackup backup sets.

grootpa,

Unfortunately, due to the fact that BackupExec does not include externally-published API's, it is not possible to achieve the level of integration required by CYA HOTBackup.  If you are having trouble achieving synchronous backups for your EMC Documentum environment using BackupExec, consider the CYA SmartRecovery product which generates its own set of captures directly through the EMC Documentum API's, and can be used to complement BackupExec after a disaster to both reduce your data loss window (RPO) to minutes, and repair synchronicity problems between the individual component backups taken using BackupExec!

Thanks Robert,

1/ Does BackupExec 2012 V-Ray do real time backups of VMWare VM's ?

2/ If so, I can use BackupExec 2012 and CYA Smartrecovery to backup and restore DCTM servers in real time ?

Thanks again!
