Enterprise Vault 11 is right around the corner. Is your environment ready for it? Are you already on Enterprise Vault and this will be a 'simple' upgrade, or are you on an older version of Enterprise?

Is there a particular feature or benefit you are most looking forward to in Enterprise Vault 11?

For me, I think it's the IMAP support. I can't wait to try that out on my iPad.

Hi Rob,

Do you have more insight on this ? Is 9.0.2 to 11 supported??
i am planning to upgrade next month from 9.0.2 to 10.4 and if the above upgrade path supports i think i should wait and skip one level.

I would doubt that you can skip a version. It has never been possible to do that before.

Greetings, Cdee;

Rob is correct.  A direct upgrade from 9.0.2 to 11.0.0 is not supported.  You have to upgrade to some version of 10.0 first.  See TECH53174 (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH53174) for the supported upgrade paths.

As you are on 9.0.2, your planned upgrade to 10.0.4 should be fine unless you also have Compliance Accelerator (CA) and / or Discovery Accelerator (DA).  If you have CA and / or DA, you'll need to upgrade it / them to either 9.0.4, 9.0.5, or 10.0.0 before upgrading to 10.0.4.  Once you have CA / DA upgraded, you can upgrade EV 9.0.2 directly to EV 10.0.4.  I also recommend upgrading to Cumulative Hotfix 3 for EV/CA/DA 10.0.4 (10.0.4CHF3) as there are some nice fixes to issues that have been found.

If you want to proceed on to upgrade to 11.0.0, please wait at least one week to ensure all is working well on 10.0.4.  After you're sure all is working well on 10.0.4, upgrade CA / DA first, then upgrade EV.

As a reminder, be sure you've got plenty of available space on the SQL Server's drive or drives that host the transaction logs for the CA, DA and / or EV databases.  Also be sure your antivirus software has our recommended exclusions in place on the EV/CA/DA and SQL servers prior to upgrading.

I hope this information helps.  Let us know if you need anything more regarding upgrading to 11.0.0.

Thanks for the explanation Kenneth, so in this case is it possible to do inline upgrade of the EV 10 to EV 11 ?

what about the storage requirements ? Do I have to provision the same amount of LUN t be successfully upgrade from EV 10 to EV11 ?

Kind regards,

I'd suggest if you have specific questions about EV 11, now that it is released, to create a new forum post, then it gets a wider audience and can be easily answered.

Sorry for the delayed responses, folks.

John: If I understand your defiition of an inline upgrade, it is possible to do an inline upgrade of EV 10 to 11 if you are upgrading from any version of EV 10.  As noted though, if you are running any verion of CA or DA, you must upgrade CA and DA before upgrading EV.

The space needed for the upgrade on the SQL Server drive(s) hosting the databases and their transaction logs follows our normal convention.  We in EV Support for CA and DA prefer you have 4X the size of the database available for the transaction logs, but EV does not need as much free space if the recovery model is set to Simple or Bulk-logged (only 2x the db size is required).  However, if the normal Full recovery is specified, then the standard 4X the db size is required.  Our recommended db maintenance can recover this space after the upgrade completes if desired.

Please read through the EV 11 upgrade document before conducting your upgrade.  Follow its recommendations and instructions for a better upgrade experience.

Check out DOC6634, "Enterprise Vault 11.0 - Documentation", for a listing of available EV 11 documents.  This article is available at http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6634.  You should be able to find the answers to most, if not all, of your questions within the documents referenced in that article.

Good luck to all you folks who plan to upgrade to EV 11.0!  Remember that EV Support s always ready to assist if needed.
