Enterprise Vault and Throttling Policies

As everyone should know with Exchange 2010 came a new feature called Throttling Policies.  The idea behind these is that they prevent a single client from going 'mad' and consuming too many resources against the Exchange Server.  This could be due to a user error, bad code, or malicious attack.

Overall this is a good thing.

However, it does have significant impact when it comes to 'service account' type access, such as that which is needed by Blackberry Enterprise Server, and Enterprise Vault.

In these situations the 'user' is a service account, and restricting it can be bad.

Enterprise Vault provides a script to change the policy which applies to the Vault Service Account to an unrestricted one.  The script essentially creates a new throttling policy, with no limits, and then associates the Vault Service Account mailbox with that policy.

You can see on my Exchange 2010 server that I have the default, plus the EV policy:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-throttlingpolicy | format-list -property isdefault, name, isvalid, rcamaxconcurrency

IsDefault : True
Name : DefaultThrottlingPolicy_7c4e8a33-3c13-4a0e-9b32-3a81c12fe6b8
IsValid : True
RCAMaxConcurrency : 20

IsDefault : False
Name : EnterpriseVault_D0F41A15-9E91-D111-84E6-0000F877D428
IsValid : True
RCAMaxConcurrency :

And you can also see the associations of mailboxes to policies:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-throttlingpolicyassociation -anr vaultadmin
