I’m very pleased to announce that we will very shortly be making available a production Enterprise Vault client for Outlook 2010.

The EV 9.0.1 client will be made available earlier than the full 9.0.1 release (which is scheduled for release later in the year) and will be released on the 22ndOctober 2010. On this date the EV 9.0.1 client will be uploaded to Symantec FileConnect and will be available to download from Monday 25thOctober onwards.

The early release 9.0.1 client will be fully supported for production use and will offer support for Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 (32bit and 64bit). It will be supported against EV Server versions 8.0.4 and 9.0. It will also offer English language support only (full internationalisation will only occur in time for the full 9.0.1 kit release later in the year). More information, including full documentation, will be included in the client kit.

From Monday onwards you'll be able to download it .. it takes a "few days" for it to get there, from when it's sent.

You can continue running 8 SP 4 server, and if you apply the hotfix (detailed in the release notes with the client kit) on to your 8 SP 4 server, you'll be able to use the new client on some test machines, against your 8 SP 4 server.

Hope that helps.

Outlook 2010 client

One question:

The client for outlook 2010 that will be released now in coming days, is that the one that will be shipped with the full release of enterprise vault 9.0.1 when it's released later? Or are this just an upgrade of the current one that was released with full release of enterprise vault 9.0.0 earlier this year?

Thanks in advanced,

The EV Outlook Addin version

The EV Outlook Addin version that ships with the "full" 9.0.1 build later, will likely be newer.  In other words the one which comes with the full 9.0.1 will likely include other fixes that are added to the code base between the one released now, and when the 9.0.1 version is shipped.

Does that help?

Migrate from english EV-client to another locale

Hello,

With "English language support only" I assume it means that the EV-client is only localized to english as of now, but that it still support Outlook in other locales than english. Is that correct?

My customer is about to deploy Office 2010 but wants to keep Outlook 2007 because the EV-client that support Outlook 2010 isn't yet available in their locale. I personally would like them to deploy Outlook 2010 with the english EV-client and then migrate to the localized one when its available.

Is it possible to do, and would it be a simple MSI-install over the existing installation?

Thanks in advance

OK, I have installed the new client on a test VM with Outlook 2010. As I understand it from the posts above, at least 8.0 SP4 is required for the new client; but ours is running 8.0 SP3 and everything seems fine.

Can someone highlight the problems we are likely to encounter with this configuration? I am looking at maybe delaying upgrading the server until 9.0.1 is fully released, but we still need to start rolling out office 2010 first and avoiding having to apply a service pack first would be a boon.

The client will likely work,

The client will likely work, to a point, however there are some server side changes necessary for things like "search" and "archive explorer" to work properly.  These server side changes are only being made to the certified/support combinations :-

EV 9

EV 8 SP 4

And the fixes are already in EV 8 SP 5

So as Michel says, if you want to be supported/certified, then those are the versions of EV server you would need to be on.

Outlook 2010 crashes with 9.0.1 add-in

Hi,

Has anyone experienced Outlook 2010 crash when clicking an email in the Virtual Vault to be shown in the Reading Pane ?  I have three users with this issue at the moment.  Also, sometimes when they start Outlook it gets stuck at the loading ev add-in step.

Nobody is having this issue with Outlook 2007.  Our server is 8.0.4 with http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH141575 applied.

Thanks

No, we've not had any people

No, we've not had any people contact us with regards to Outlook crashing when clicking on an item in virtual vault.

I'd suggest two approaches : 1) a new forum thread, where we can discuss it in more detail, and 2)  Contact Symantec Support and progress the issue that way.

With regards to starting Outlook and sometimes it appears to get stuck as the loading EV Add-in step... are these people having this issue when they start up Outlook say, at home, or an airport or wherever.  Somewhere where they have an internet connection, but no connection to your corporate EV, and Exchange environment?  It *should* continue after between 60-120 seconds.  It's something I spotted, and has been fixed post this early release drop, I describe it in this technote :

RE: Outlook 2010 crashes with 9.0.1 add-in

Hi Rob,

These people are at the office, connected right to the LAN, beside people having Office 2007 with no issue.  For one of those Outlook 2010 user, I uninstalled the EV add-in, deleted the KVS folder and his OST file from his profile, reinstalled the add-in and let the Outlook and EV cache refresh with the online mbx and vault.  The same issue occurred again once the VV reappearred. I guess I'll have to contact Symantec support...

Both are still occurring.  The Add-In reinstall, KVS folder and OST file re-creation didn't helped.

The hang at Outlook startup is random, when it occurs the user kills the outlook.exe process and starts Outlook again and repeats until he can get in.

The crash is occurring every time he tries to access an item in the VV.

Okay, please can we start a new forum thread on this issue, as this isn't really the place to discuss it.

When you create the new thread, please list things like :-

* OS (and whether it's 64 bit or 32 bit)

* Office flavour (and whether it's 64 bit or 32 bit)

* A client trace, showing the problem with archiving.  Couple that with a dtrace of w3wp, agentclientbroker, archiving task.. though I'm not sure we need the last one.  Please indicate the subject of a test message.

With regards to the hang, if it can be reproduce, how long does the user wait before "giving up"?  Is anything written to the client log?  We may have to go the way of producing a userdump of Outlook to troubleshoot that further - we can cover that in the other forum post too :)

Client for Outlook 2010

Hello,

I was reading here regarding the client.

When I login to the Fileconnect with our serial number, I can download until 8 SP5, but there is no new client files there.

Am wondering that in case our upgrade contract has expired on this serial, we will still be able to get just the client for Outlook 2010.

This as I am sure this year there is no more budget to buy a new upgrade, but we will do a roll-out of Outlook 2010 clients before end-year.

Upgrading of the EV server will be combined with Exchange 2k10 upgrade scheduled for 2011.

So any way I can get the client files only, to connect to our 8 server?

Thanks,

Ivo

Full Client support???

Rob, sorry but you were a little vague.  Will we be seeing a full EV client again soon, or is it HTTP only from here on in?  I have a 10,000 user environment who very much use the dialog box to store data in other Vault and/or change the retention policies on manually archived items.

Whether it's DCOM or not, I don't care, well, the user doesn't care, they just need the functionality, and are wanting to get onto Outlook 2010, but can't at this time.

The current plan is that

The current plan is that DCOM/Full client functionality will be built in to the HTTP client... so in the future there will still be only one client.  Unfortunately there is no timescale as to when this will be, yet.  That is currently being worked out.

If you have many users who use the folder properties, or the "store in vault" dialog as you indicated, then at the moment the 9.0.1 Outlook 2010 client (or in fact any HTTP-only client) isn't the way forward for you.

Full Client support

I also have a customer with on-going exchange/outlook 2010 projects with 9k and another one with 16k mailboxes.

They have the same needs like change the retention category etc. and the outlook 2010 project is currently driven by a differnt team which want to rollout in early 2011

So i know that symantec currently investigates to develop a client with the full functionallity...

Does someone have any idea about the timeline? Will it Mid-2011 or early-2012

Priorities...

No offence to Symantec programmers, but I think a Full client is a higher priority then EV10.  Supporting and maintaining existing funtionality is vitial, and looks really bad to customers when the core is not there.  Very few of my clients ever deployed the HTTP-only, and are firmly entrenced in not giving it up, and in many case are not able to.  Some may, if only they could modify secondary virtual vaults.  Working on the core isn't as cool as working on the future neato stuff, but we've been living without 64-bit indexing for a long time, a couple more months delay there to focus on the client I don't think would break to many of our customers hearts...
