Statement of Direction

Symantec announced support for Microsoft Outlook 2010 OR (Original Release) with the Enterprise Vault 9.0.1 release in 2010. This release made a fully functional Enterprise Vault HTTP-only client available to all Enterprise Vault customers. The HTTP-only client provides the following functionality:

  • Full Enterprise Vault shortcut functionality
  • Full Enterprise Vault  toolbar functionality including access to EV Search and Archive Explorer
  • Full Vault Cache / Virtual Vault
  • Full PST migration capability
  • Windows Desktop Search integration (with the exception of Windows 64-bit / Outlook 32-bit combinations)

Building on this initial client release for Outlook 2010, Symantec is looking to ship an updated version of the client which includes enhanced client capabilities. These capabilities will be closely aligned to the Enterprise Vault full client available for previous Outlook versions. This functionality includes:

  • Enterprise Vault property page for mailbox root

- Capability for end user to modify the associated retention category (if permitted by policy)

- Capability for end user to enable/disable archiving for the mailbox (if permitted by policy)

  • Enterprise Vault property page for mailbox folder

- Capability for end user to modify the archiving policy (if permitted by policy)

- Capability for end user to modify the associated retention category (if permitted by policy)

  • Enterprise Vault dialog page for “Store in Vault” action

- Capability for end user to modify the destination archive

- Capability for end user to modify the associated retention category

  • Enterprise Vault dialog page for  “Restore from Vault” action

- Capability for end user to modify the restore location

- Capability for end user to choose to delete the shortcut on restore

  • Archive entire folder functionality

Symantec expects to be able to deliver this functionality in Q1 2012.

More information will be made available nearer to the time.

The foregoing statements are merely a statement of intent based on the current Enterprise Vault product direction and policies known to Symantec at this time.  The statements made are subject to change at any time, based on changes in the market or industry practices.  No guarantees are provided and no warranties are conveyed by Symantec with regards to this statement of direction, and no reliance on this statement of direction should be made.

Support for Outlook 2010 on the EV server is still pending due to technical difficulties with the changes made to Outlook over previous versions. Can I ask why you are requesting this information?

Ok. At the moment there is no timeframe for getting this resolved as we are reliant on MS changes which are not likely to happen in the short/medium term. I would recommend this customer investigates other avenues of obtaining Outlook 2007 as the best and most immediate course of action.

Sorry its not better news.

Evault 9/10 Exchange 2010 Outlook 2010

At the moment we're running EV9 on Exchange 2003.

We're currently rolling out Outlook 2010 to client machines slowly and intend to migrate to exchange 2010 within the next 6 months.

Am I understanding that EV10/Exch2010/Outlook 2010 is a "no-go" combination?

Thanks, just trying to think ahead a bit.

Is there any news on when the Outlook 2010 client will suport all previous features ? We are embarking on a Windows 7/Outlook 2010 rollout and we cant proceed until we can offer our customers the same functionality they have been used to on an XP/Outlook 2003 combination.

Full client functionality for

Full client functionality for Outlook 2010 will be available with 10.0.1 which is slated for release early this year. In the meantime you can sign up for the technical preview program for 10.0.1 which will give you early access to the 10.0.1 client preview bits to enable you to test the client. Let me know if this is something you'd like to participate in.

Will 9.0.x have 2010 Full client?

Hi Alex,

I notice you mentioned 10.0.1 for full client, but will they also be releasing a 9.0.x version as well?

Thank you,

Hi Darrell, Full client

Hi Darrell,

Full client functionality for Outlook 2010 will only be available in 10.0.1 or later. We don't have any plans currently to back port to the 9.x stream due to the overhead of doing so. You'll be able to run a 9.x EV server with the 10.0.1 client so hopefully that makes the upgrade easier.

Regards,

Alex.

Sounds ok to me. That combination is supported however you may want to consider a slightly more recent version of the EV client. 9.0.3 is available now.

Is 9.0.3 higher that the 9.0.5169?

If yes, will it be fine if we also use the current EV 10 client?

By the way, thank you very much for the fast response. Very much appreciated.

I think you have the client

I think you have the client version wrong as it looks like you are missing a digit from that client version? Normally it takes the form: <major version>.<minor version>.<service pack version>.<build number>. So for example the latest 9 client available is 9.0.3.1221 which is a version 9 client, service pack 3, build 1221.

All version 9 clients are supported on either 8, 9 or 10 EV servers.

All version 10 clients are supported on either 9 or 10 EV servers.

If you wish to use a 10 client then you can either use the 10.0.0 client version currently available or you could wait for a couple more weeks until the 10.0.1 release (end of this month) and use that version which I would highly recommend. The 10.0.1 client introduces full client support for Outlook 2010 for the first time.

The 10.0.1 client does not

The 10.0.1 client does not work correctly in Outlook 2010 when running EV 9.0.2.

When trying to view folder properties, you'll get a message "The Enterprise Vault server does not support this feature".

Anyone know how to fix this?  Is it even possible to get it to work?

I've got to say, the lack of support for Outlook 2010 has been extremely frustrating.  My plans to deploy Office 2010 have been delayed by more than a year due to Symantec not supporting Outlook 2010.

There is a server hotfix

There is a server hotfix required to make this functionality work on EV server versions earlier than 10.0.1.

Take a look at the Updates_en.htm file on the EV kit and look for the following section where you will find URL's to the hotfx you will need to apply to your 9.0.2 servers:

Enterprise Vault server hotfixes required to support the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-In [Ref E2610100, E2611166]

If you plan to roll out the Enterprise Vault 10.0.1 Outlook Add-In to users before you upgrade the Enterprise Vault servers, you must apply a hotfix to the Enterprise Vault servers to avoid the restrictions listed below. There is a separate hotfix for each version of Enterprise Vault.

Cheers,

Alex.

To speed things up, here is the URL for the 9.0.2 hotfix: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH175940
