You may have noticed the absence in the EV 9.0.1 release notes about Exchange Server 2010 SP1 self-signed certificates blocking the EV OWA extensions.  Well that's because we are now able to support self-signed certificates.

Therefore once you have installed or upgraded to the EV 9.01 OWA extensions there is no need to disable SSL for Exchange Web Services.

For those upgrading who had followed the steps in the EV 9.0 release notes you can re-enable SSL again and remove the value EnterpriseVault_ExchangeWebServicesUrl from web.config (assuming it was there to support self-signed certificates).
