Exporting Jobs for Safety Reasons in Deployment Solution

Jan 17, 2008 10:44 AM

When creating jobs that will be reused in an installation of Deployment Solution, export the jobs to a folder on a hard drive other then the hard drive where the Deployment Database is stored. In this way the jobs can be imported back into Deployment Solution if the jobs are accidentally deleted. This will also safeguard the jobs if the Deployment Server and/or Deployment Database have to be rebuilt from scratch.

The steps required to export the jobs are best done by gathering the jobs into a folder within the Jobs pane of the Deployment Console. Once the jobs are in one folder, right click this folder and selected Export... The Export Selected Job(s)/Folder(s) dialog comes up and you can browse to a place on you network drives where the file can be saved.

Give the file a name and Click on OK.

To assure that the export was good, import the folder back into your Deployment Console under a Test folder and then check the subfolders to make sure that all of the jobs came back with the import. If they came in fine, you can delete this import so that you don't have a redundant set of jobs. Your exported jobs should now be safe and ready for import should you need them later.

Hi,
We have all the jobs in one folder and use axexport.exe (part of Deployment Server installation) to export all jobs every night.
We have scheduled a bat file to run
REM export jobs from Master DS
\\< Deployment Server Name>\eXpress\axexport.exe \\< Deployment Server Name>\\eXpress\JobsMigr\jobsmig.bin /f < Folder name (with all the jobs)>\ /s /y /d < SQL Server Name>\ /db eXpress /lu "< Deployment Server Service account details>" /lp "< Service account password>"

...or, burn them to CD as well. You can never have too many backups!
