Football Players Win Football Games. Spammers Can’t!

Mar 04, 2009 04:47 PM

Does online gambling give the biggest thrill? Why not—earning easy money is always exciting. Do you want to know the results of the big games in advance? It guarantees big returns, after all. There will always be someone falsely claiming to be able to help you achieve this dream.

Symantec has recently observed emails regarding online betting that claim to provide recipients with details behind the “fixed” football matches. The spammers claim that confidential information on the results of such matches can be used for a betting advantage. The sender claims that he can be contacted at a pre-provided email address, if the recipient is interested in buying this information cheaply. Or, the victim could be drawn in one step further and could bet on these matches using a spammer-owned website.

Users should be aware that online gambling is often associated with fraud, unless strictly regulated. There are various risks involved, the least of which is winning nothing. As always, we recommend that users follow best practices, which includes not communicating with the spammer in any way, whether by email, phone number, website redirect, an attachment, or embedded item.

Below is an example of one of these spam messages, followed by an English translation:

Message Translation:

Good day!

I have a serious proposal for You. I have confidential information about fixed football matches, where the results are known beforehand.

I make money by placing bets on these events. I am paying a lot of money for this information.
I am proposing you to You use this information for a fraction of the price, one tenth less than I am paying. For myself, I see this as additional income. I have a website where you can get all conditions that apply for working with me.

This suggestion is absolutely serious. If you are interested, please write to
