The IT department at MTR Corporation was faced with significant challenges as it began its merger with Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation in December of 2007. Following the merger, the company would see the number of computer users, servers, and nodes double, while experiencing a 150 percent increase in email and internet traffic. To solve these problems, Danial Lai, head of information technology at MTR, turned to a number of Symantec solutions and services.

By implementing Veritas Cluster Server, MTR saw a 33 percent hardware cost avoidance. In addition, MTR standardized its backup and recovery on Veritas NetBackup, allowing for a 25 percent growth in data volume. By implementing Symantec Brightmail Gateway, MTR reduced false positives to less than one percent of incoming email and decreased SPAM to less than three percent. Finally MTR standardized its endpoint security on Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, stopping an average of 30,000 threats per month.
