Get the new Backup Exec version before GA (General Availability)
UPDATE (May 3rd, 2011): The First Availability program is now closed as Backup Exec 2010 R3 has been officially released (GA) and all current licensed users can download the product from FileConnect. If you are under maintenance and currently only have license keys for a version older than Backup Exec 2010, you can get your update keys at the Symantec Licensing Portal. You do NOT need to update your license keys if you are currently licensed with Backup Exec 2010 or Backup Exec 2010 R2.
I posted previously about the Beta and Release Candidate (RC) program for Backup Exec 2010 R3 and we are now entering the final stretch before we start the First Availability program. If you sign up you will be able to obtain and run the production-ready general availability (GA) version of Backup Exec 2010 R3 as soon as it becomes available and before it is posted publicly on our external site.

Below are some of the new feature capabilities and improvements (updated since my last Beta/RC post):
- Deduplication performance and stability imrpovements
- Improved Deduplication rates for VMware backups
- Improved pre-installation environment checks to prevent install and backup failures
- Virtual Vault support for the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Option, enabling easy email recovery directly from Microsoft Outlook
- Nirvanix (OST) cloud solution now available without requiring the Deduplication license/install
- Improved knowledge base article lookup from error links in job logs
(EDITED 4/20: bullet point clarification/update)
First Availability software is production ready GA software that has passed stringent Symantec release and quality criteria. This is not an Alpha or Beta program and we encourage and fully support FA code in production environments.

Hello James,
when you say "Nirvanix (OST) cloud solution now available without requiring the Deduplication license" do you mean that using Backup Exec 2010 R3 customers will be able to directly target deduped backup jobs to Nirvanix cloud solution without requiring the Backup Exec Deduplication license ot that they will simply be able to target non-deduped backup jobs to Nirvanix cloud solution as long as they do not have the Backup Exec Deduplication license ?solution Nirvanix cloud solutionNirvanix cloud solution Nirvanix cloud solution or to as long as they
Thank you and have a great day.
Massimiliano
With this new release you do NOT have to have the Deduplication license in order to use the Nirvanix Cloud plug-in (in Backup Exec 2010 R2 you DID have to have the Deduplication license due to the OST engine dependency at that time). The plug-in uses our OST standard but does not currently implement any Deduplication technology on the cloud side. However, you can target Deduplicated data to be copied up to the Nirvanix "device" (cloud storage), but it will be "hydrated" just like a duplicate/copy job to tape. Think of the Nirvanix solution as an offsite tape type solution without the tapes.

Hi
Fairly serious limitation of BE 2010 R2 and ADBO only working when backup server and target server are same version of Windows OS ie. 2003 or 2008. How is it feasible to migrate multiple sites to new version of BE 2010 R2 when big bang approach is required for all servers plus BE server to change OS?
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...
I'll be interested to know whether this is addressed in R3.
Many thanks
Off-host backups are initiated/controlled through VSS and Microsoft only accepts (supports) import/export of snapshots between the same Windows Server plattforms.
So, there's no way to "fix" this with backup software only.
Sorry
G.
When can we expect 2010 R3 to become available via LiveUpdate?
only Hotfixes/DeviceUpdates are available via LiveUpdate
Full builds have to be downloaded and installed.

Will the slow performance when backing up the System State of a Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 server be fixed in 2010 R3? This has become a real problem in our organization. We are currently running BackupEXEC 2010 R2 with all updates and hotfixes, but when it goes to backup the System State I have seen it hang for up to 2 hours per server.

i've seen it in my testbed and also had positive feedback from customers.

will there be an official support for Small Business Server 2011?
thanks
Presently, Backup Exec 2010 R3 does not support Microsoft SBS 2011. We are targeting support in the Summer timeframe.
What are the reasons for Backup Exec 2010 R3 not supporting SBS 2011, does it install and can it backup to tape?
We don't offer support for a new platform until we've completed the full range of compatability testing that's required for the specific platform. So while Backup Exec 2010 R3 will install on an SBS 2011 system and perform backups to disk and tape, it won't be supported until we've finished qualification process and taken any corrective actions deemed necessary. Once that's been accomplished we'll release the statement of support in the Software Compatability List.
Hallo ,
when Backup Exec 2010 R3 will be available? Is ther any date or time? one week? two weeks?
Thanks
Are you referring to the General Availability date?

Hey James,
Just signed up, although I was participating in the SSR beta program. Is BESR 2010 R3 different from SSR? Also, do you have any insight as to when SEP 12 public beta will begin? I signed up for that but have not heard anything.
Thanks.
Eric
This blog post is actually about Backup Exec 2010 R3, which is not related to Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 or Symantec System Recovery 2011 (though they do share GRT/GRO technologies). Hopefully the System Recovery rename will help clear up confusion like this :) I'll see what I can find out on the SEP beta for you.

Does R3 support SQL 2000?
Bill
Can a Symantec Employee answer the question on 4/7/11 from Will Wally? This is also a concern in my organization and I have read that it would be fixed in R3. From various forum posts that I have read this is a problem for many organizations.
Install went well - much better than when this use to be a Veritas product - installed over the top of R2
Ran a test backup - vmware - I havent set it up yet properly so was expecting it not to work yet
but tried clicking on the error link and cant get the page to load:

With the release of BE 2010 R3 we now support SBS 2011 Essentials and SBS 2011 Standard. Support for SBS 2011 Premium will be coming soon however there is no date set.
Here is a link to the BE 2010 R3 SCL that includes the information on SBS 2011.
