Getting to Know Your Asset Database

EWANG's picture

One of the best ways to learn how to create a customized report is to get familiar with the Altiris Database. The steps in this tip were written to get you started on the road to custom report creation.

Let's try to build a report from the simple report template. We'll use "Computer Asset" as an example.

Figure 1. Report Builder.

Select "Computer" for the Data Type.

Click on the "Fields" link and select the fields you wish to display. (for this scenario I decided to use Domain, Name, and perhaps IP address).

Figure 2. Field Selection.

Click "Finish" when done.

Our next step is to visit the report we've created and edit the report. Notice in Figure 3 there is an advanced button in the report editor front page.

Figure 3. Report Editor Front Page.

Click on the "Advanced" button and you'll see a query builder wizard appear.

In the next dialog box, click on "Edit SQL Directly", you should be able to see a SQL Script in the dialog box. The sql script display should give you a good start on learning Altiris Database.

Great tip

I have been trying to get a report done for a couple of days and with your tips I should be able to complete it now.

Duplicate data entries

My Report Builder shows duplicate data types.

For example, in the picture, figure 2 above, you show IP Address entry. On my NS when run, I get IP Address 2 times in the list along with every other entry as duplicates.

We recently moved the SQL database to another server and am not sure if that is the cause or what can be done to fix it.

Any help welcome,
