A giant step forward… Symantec's share of storage software market on the rise according to IDC
On Monday, Sept. 8 IDC released the results of its "Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker" for the second calendar quarter of 2008 and Symantec has reason to smile! Here are some of the highlights that caught my eye:
* Our market share grew at a jaw-dropping rate of 26 percent year over year - that's nearly double the storage software growth rate in general and nearly twice the growth rate of any other vendor!
* Symantec maintained the overall #2 ranking with 19.1 percent -- behind EMC's 24.2 percent -- and we narrowed the gap between us considerably!
* In the Data Protection and Recovery Software category we maintained our #1 ranking with a phenomenal 35.2 percent market share -- nearly three times our nearest competitor!
* In the Storage Infrastructure category (Storage Foundation solutions) we regained our #1 market share over EMC with 28.7 percent (vs. 26 percent for EMC). Our growth in the quarter was truly remarkable with 24.7 percent QoQ (vs. 9.5 percent for the overall market)
* In the File System area, Symantec was a dominant #1 in market share with 50.9 percent (vs. IBM's 8.3 percent). This is a 36.8 percent QoQ rise (vs. 21.2 percent with the overall market)
* In the Archiving Software category, we maintained our #2 market share position with 16.4 percent (vs. IBM at 27.4 percent). Our growth YOY was double that of the overall market rate.
Talk about outperforming the competition! For more information on the complete IDC report, click here.
Any way you look at it there's only upside for us on the storage side of the business. Congratulations to the various product teams and let's keep this ball rolling…
