Heat Wave Brings Spam

Sep 07, 2010 07:45 PM

A heat wave has hit Russia hard. It has gotten worse and has led to forest fires. Extremely high temperatures across western Russia have reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), causing death and creating the worst drought since 1972. The weather is too hot for plants to grow and the water has evaporated, killing fish. It is possible that this natural disaster and food shortages will push inflation up later in the year. However, the Internet economy has not been damaged by burning hot weather at all; spammers are taking this opportunity to promote products such as air conditioners for hot seasons or tropical zones.

Unfortunately, heat waves lead to forest fires and the fires raise the temperature even higher.
Russians are suffering because of the dense smoke from the forest fires. Filter masks and related respiratory equipment are needed. Spammers are using this calamity as an opportunity by selling respiratory masks online and claiming this business helps people and makes money at the same time. In Example 3, readers may wonder whether the spam body content is written in Russian language. In this case, the spammer promotes products using English letters for Russian words to bypass spam filters.

Although the forest fires are under control now, Symantec is expecting another wave of spam related to heat-waves, such as UV products and a donation scam about starving and homeless people. Symantec recommends users not to open mail from unknown senders and to update your Symantec software often to ensure your data is safe.
