If you're like me, sometimes it takes a series of screen captures to help me grasp a difficult concept. Juice reader/contributor tech9 has taken the time to document the process of capturing an application to an SVS layer. Maybe I'll "get it" this time around. Thanks tech9!

Execute SVS and click File, Create New Layer.

Next, take the default, “install application” option and click next.

Next, Name the application so you can identify it as a layer later and click next.

Next, leave the default “Single program Capture” and click the Browse button.

Next, browse to the application that you want to create as a virtual application. In my case, I am browsing to the Ultimate Zip application.
Select the application and click open.

Next, you will see the path under the program name, click next.

And finally to begin installing the application install, click finish.

The application install will execute…
In my example, I click next.

How do I know that the capture is taking place?
You will see the SVS icon spinning in your system tray.

Next, I accept the license agreement and click next.

Next, I leave the default install location and click next.

Next, I leave the default and click next.

Next, you have the option to add shortcuts; I leave the default and click next.

Finally, I am ready to install. I click the install button.

The application installs, and SVS is capturing the install.

Finally, the install finishes and I click the finish button.

Last but not least; to stop capturing the application, right click the SVS icon in the system startup tray and click stop capture.

You just created your first virtual application with SVS.

To deactivate the layer or turn it off, right-click the layer and select deactivate layer.
You will notice that the application disappears from your OS.

To activate the layer or turn it on, right-click the layer and select activate layer.

The layer will appear in bold text and the application will appear on your OS.

That is all!
