I think a lot of people, like me, spend a lot of time try finding how to get those download:

  • Latest Symantec workspace Virtualization, SWV 6.1, that is advanced SVS version, is integrated with the Altiris client management suite CMS 7.  (Yes, it was also named "SVS PRO")
  • Notice 1: This package includes the "Wise Virtual Composer", and both x86+x64 versions.
  • Notice 2: This link currently also includes SWS (Streaming) and SWC (Corporate)
  • [please vote my post if you use it ;-]

Story: I was thinking only SVS 2.1 (Software Virtualization Solution) was integrated into the "Client Management Suite 7". But this is not the case and SWV 6.1 (Symantec Workspace Virtualization) must not be paid in addition.

Free home license: Both SVS 2.1 "light" version & SWV are still free personal use. I suggest you use now the latest SWV 6.4
(That is SWV 6.1 SP7 or following! Yes Symantec do this version naming - vote here also to ask Symantec stop this curious).

CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1, includes sp7 mp1, Got now a better integration then 7.0, but can do better:

  • 1st: NOT UP TO DATE (why no auto-update like patch solution... or a patch from SIM, as it is design for?)
If you want latest version: you have to download and import the MSI file into your CMS7 Software components.
  • 2nd: Valid detection rules, not integrated  (issue should solved with 1st)
    785f9a4d-d113-43b3-aa1d-77ad777f0a2f     is 6.4.1266 x64
    f0903be8-e528-405d-8ae5-2a4c7048827a   is 6.4.1266 x86
    dcc5b9e2-d918-4b9d-93ff-062d8ab987ee    is 6.4.1346 x64
The good news, Symantec stop using the same MSI Product code all builds: So you do not need any more to add a detection "rule" from "uninstall" Windows registry. The "BAD": under the condition you are able to extract the MSI: because with the EXE install package, when import into ALTIRIS7, you do not get any MSI code, or any repair/remove command line autobuild... See 4th!
  • 3rd: MUST CREATE Your agent Policy (issue should solved with 1st)
You need to create your own policy; because integrated ones . => If your purely replace existing to reuse provided default policies: and replace the physical package... I am afraid later update failure, (I see the case with the MP1/sp2 CMS)
  • 4th: EXE package instead of MSI (issue mitigated if 1st solved)
6.3 (and laters) are only EXE file (you can not unzip), so you need to start the EXE, extract from the temp directory (%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\SYMANTEC\SEV) the MSI File before exiting the EXE... Why provide an EXE instead of MSI (vote here!)
  • 5th: No detection rules for XPF [That is a MUST]
There is no "detection rule" tool for SWV packages, you should be able to check if installed, activated, etc... That is not the case, must script.

Happy to remove the 6th: auto-generate import/activation commands: I must say thanks for the supported XPF now, previously only VSA file were supported for package import process into CMS 7.1, it works now with XPF files :)

Also thanks for the Policies integration: install/uninstall/upgrade, now available inside the console, no need top build your own, except you update latest.

SWV 6.1 Officials:

  • yes HERE THE LATEST (I Know at 2013-02-20): not sure if using the FTP below,
availabe from the official link:  http://go.symantec.com/sevdownloads/
  • But you will see a list to give another chance to wrong: Just guess which is the good one...
    Symantec Workspace Virtualization 6.1 SP8 122 MB
    Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1 SP8 586 MB
    Symantec Workspace Corporate 6.2 MP2 75 MB
Symantec Workspace Streaming SDK 6.1 SP1 32 MB

    ... Guess it?
Yes, it was the 1st one, Else download directly the KB below:
    SWV 6.1 SP8 MP1 (that is 6.4.1711 verified at Oct 10, 2012), from http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO77642 enlightened

  • cool USE WITH CARE: Another less official download source:
From 2010-10-05, there were also a FTP site to use, for a more latest version, from time to time:

(I do not check if still available, your feedback are welcome :)...

History

Evaluation & CMS 7 users license fixed key:

A new evaluation Key is available from the SP3, is also the key for integrated CMS7 usage (but symantec can also send you another key, I suggest using your own key) :

  • cyvwe-wm64b-m58u2-nrpv2

SVS 2.1 Officials: and probably obsolete version should not use any more...

Seems we are now freeze this version will stop any update:  [last checked 2010-01-28]

Version 2.1 license fixed keys for CMS and Free home usage:

  • That is providing currently a fixed serial for all home user is: b6c5a-wiy8u-e89de-c3cv4  ;-)
  • For CMS7 customers, the fixed serial for installing SVS is: byv5a-wkyrb-k99w6-8db04

I suppose those links will be oboslete in a future, because "altiris.com" instead of "symantec.com". So please, I suggest you subscribe this post & as soon as you find a "new" good download area, just add in there or message me! (So I can correct this post ;-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing tricks:

EXE install

  • Yes, of course, was too much simple to keep it as a MSI ! So now place to an EXE... You can probably track the temp place the EXE extract the MSI to redo as a MSI (Check the folder "C:\ProgramData\Symantec\SEV" sub temp folder to see the extracted package (msi admin) when you run the exe)
  • else, the silent option for the EXE is "/s" :)
    Symantec_Workspace_Virtualization_x64.exe /s SWV.ADDLOCAL=Altiris_NS
(Manual writed need to provide a SWV.PRODUCT_KEY=<code> is mandatory => not true, also Reboot really suppress not necessary)
  • Be aware the EXE version install the VCREDIRECT 2008 (Visual C++ Runtime v9) if missing, not sure the MSI does.

Be care:

  • MSI code for SVS are the same number for all SVS 2.1 revisions {7D8DBB7C-1C55-4950-A107-043C164F379A},
so the CMS7 default package import is not giving sufficient "detection rule" to distinguish correct versions. :-(
  • SVS 2.1 installer does not detect conflict previous install of a SWV 6.1 version: you will get bad surprise (I do this by accident, this remove all my layers, not reset: remove them from manage, but keep files fsldr on disk. Upgrade from 2.1 to 6.1 seems ok, but I do not try with latest).
  • NS6/SMP7/CMS: For integrating SVS or SWV agent install with an existing NS Altiris agent (either version 6 or version 7), just add "ALTIRIS_NS=1" property parameter: eg.
msiexec /qb /i svsagent.msi PRODUCT_KEY=b6c5a-wiy8u-e89de-c3cv4 ALTIRIS_NS=1

SWV SP7 Skylark Now Available
Jordan | Blog
This week we released SWV SP7 (6.4.1266), formally known as Skylark, which what we're calling a hardening release. After the last two big releases, SP4 and SP6, we decided to make this release focus on only bug fixes so there are no new features that have been added.

The naming scheme has to do with Symantec policy and some other internal stuff so it's not something we could change even if we wanted too.

If a forum post solves your problem please flag is as the solution

Hi Jordan, you talk as Symantec was a none movable mamuth ? A Mamuth can move: Just try to beat the trunk, you'll see it moving... on your head !! :)

Any way, are you sure the guy reading correctly the "Symantec policy" ?

see http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH100662

Perhaps should Symantec build a policy to consolidate all the policies a single one ?

devil (Oh yes I know, your policy will not allow you answer on this public Forum, what you think exactly about this :)

Be careful: the software packages built with the latest 6.4.1346, are not able to open using the previous 6.4.1266 !!!

Do not use the FTP one site in production before any confirmation from Symantec is official release.

You should be able to find it in the trialware site. If you are a customer and have access to your support portal you can get it from there as well.

I don't believe SP8 MP1 is supported in Windows 8. You'll have to wait for Chrysler (7.5). If you are anxious to try before release, you can register for Chrysler beta (at symbeta) and try that.

;-) I agree ...

When I started with SWV (mid 2009) more or less I've tested 3 final versions and more than 5 beta versions (only created for me) because a lot of problems using the product under Windows 7 x86.

Now, I'm using 6.1 SP1 MP7 with only some little problems. Today I've found one with the new version of Flash Player (ActiveX) in a layer and I've checked to see which is the latest version. Tomorrow I'll try the latest version to see if it solves this problem but ... reading the release notes I think that I'll have more problems, snif ...

Hello,

6.1 SP8 MP2 has been released. It is still not managed by Altiris, and XPF generated are not runnable with 6.1 SP7 from SMP.

BTW, it would be great to have a MSI, but it would be also great to have every Sumotec product released with a xml import to directly handle the software from Altiris...

Regards,

When we release a service pack or major product version for ITMS, we always try and include the most recent build of SWV as well.

As SWV builds are released more frequently, it is to be expected that it will not be found in a currently released ITMS version; however, it is quite simple to import into the Software Catalog for deployment via ITMS.

I know that I can import in Software Catalog, but it would be more convenient to directly update Policies, detection rules...

If Symantec wanted to invest in SMP, I really thing that making update as a "push button" process would be great. In SMP, lots of things can be done but sometimes compared to competitors it is a long process.

Today we have Symantec Installation M(forgot this one), (additional) product updates should be also published here. We have in ITMS a dedicated policy for updates, so it won't be an issue for testing before deploying.

You can also use this all the other softwares (good point to have pcAnywhere update in SIM).

Or other software families like backup tools, which has today another process, and is also not eally optimized for deployement (also compared to competitors).

Hello Nicolas,

Many thnaks for your comments and feedback.  It is greatly appreciated.  I have recently took over responsibility for Symantec Workspace Virtualization and Streaming.  This is something i have noticed myself and i am working on resolving and improving some of the integration between SMP and SWS. With the upcoming releases of both ITMS and SWS you will see both having the latest versions of SWV so this will be a good start.  Next thing i am looking at is improving the importing of XPF formats into the software catelogue.

With the next release of ITMS one of the biggest improvements as well is around the ASDK for Software Management.  If you are not part of either the ITMS Release Preview (eta late June/July) or SWS Release Preview (eta next week) which you will be able to see some of these changes.  I would suggest once the Release Previews are available that you get access to them.

I am also open to feedback, suggestions, ideas, feature requests and any type of improvements that will make SWS a better product.

Many Thanks and Kind Regards,

BTW, to add SWV 6.1 SP8 MP2 (aka 6.4.1895) x64 :

The GUID for detection rules : {501521FB-3E60-4E95-BE79-A7E7D8119721}

And the command line for installing the .exe package :

Install no GUI:
Symantec_Workspace_Virtualization_x64.exe /s SWV.ADDLOCAL=Altiris_NS

Repair :
msiexec.exe /fomus {501521FB-3E60-4E95-BE79-A7E7D8119721} /qn

Unisntall :
msiexec.exe /qn /x {501521FB-3E60-4E95-BE79-A7E7D8119721} REBOOT=ReallySuppress

I also activated the superseed option and now clients with the new package are not trying forever to install the old version (it auto adds a detection rule in the original deployment policy).

Sadly I see there has been no support for Windows 8 added in SP2, nor is the Windows 8 known Metro issue even on the list of "known issues".  Pretty typical of Symantec I suppose.

At some point here I'll give it a try on a Windows 8 machine to see if it no longer crashes 90% of Metro applications after install.

Hello DrDavis,

Many thanks for your feedback, we recently released MP2 which includes significant performance improvements and several fixes.  We do not includes new features or OS support in Maintainance Packs, these are focused solely at improvements or fixes.  OS support is normally added via SP, Minor or Major releases, in this specific question for Windows 8 support this is going to be included in our next major release of Workspace Virtualization and Streaming which we are about to make the Release Preview available tentative eta is this week, so please do make sure to register via the Symantec Beta Portal.  The release will be available around Q3.

I hope this helps answer your questions and many thanks for raising this.

Kind Regards,
