How to Include Non-Executable Files in Inventory Scans

Need to get files other than the standard .exe files into your inventories. Perhaps the programs you need to inventory do not have .exe files such as ActiveX Controls.

These can easily be added in by using the Audit Plus Configuration Editor that is part of Inventory Solution. By default it is found in this folder on your Notification Server: Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86. Run AexAPedit.exe and click on the File Masks tab.

The instructions there show that you can only enter in file types such as *.DLL or *.OCX. You can also enter in full filenames. A good example is "flash*.ocx". This inventories the different Flash Player files that will let you know what versions of Flash Player you have installed.

We use this quite extensively and can then build Software Delivery jobs and other tasks against the resulting data since it all gets stored in the Inv_AeX_SW_Audit_Software table.

Other file types

How about other file types. As software deployment can also mean just to install a shortcut on the desktop of a user, like an RDP file or something.
Does your solution also include non-executable files?
And, what is more interesting, can I than have version information automatically read and stored?

Thanks and regards,
Thomas.

There is an amazing amount of customziation you can do with the Software Inventory and AeXAPEDIT to edit the auditpls.ini.

Yes you can run inventory on non-executable files and gather version information on it

Microsoft Keys

I'd like to be able to run an inventory that would pick up the installation keys that were used. During a Microsoft true-up they want to know what keys you have used. That way I can say I have 200 excel licenses. 150 were purchased thru the volume license and 50 were purchased shrink wrapped.

Is that even possible with Inventory??

Can do

You could do it with the suggestions in the article above. If you have information that you want to inventory from inside the files then you will have to build a custom inventory and scripts to read the information out of the file and export it to an inventory file, .nsi. There are some Juice articles on how to do it and some example scripts posted.

Other file types

You can add any file you want into this field. It could be a file extension or a full file name. It will get version information as long as the file type supports it.

We have added torrent as a

We have added torrent as a file mask and into disk usage but our testing reports these files only on the C: drive. We can find exe files (we are in file mode) on other local drives but the torrent files are only reporting from c: There are no exclusions for the local drives and they are supposed to be there by default. Does anyone have an idea of why we cannot find them on a local d: drive? Thanks.
