Installing DS 6.9 with CMS 7 (including DS 7.0)

Hello all,

I wasn't 100% sure about the procedure for having DS 6.9 and CMS 7 (including DS 7.0) on the same server. It looked OK on my test server, but I wanted to verify that there wouldn't be any conflicts or issues. I called support and verified that there would be no problems with installing CMS 7, then installing DS 6.9 after that. We are going to have the SQL database for both CMS and DS off-box, so support said there should not be any performance issues.

Just passing on this info so that somebody else in the same boat will have some extra info available.

Have a great day!
George

Hi George Was this a new

Hi George
Was this a new install for you?  We are currently running NS6 / DS6.9 and we are looking at upgrading to CMS 7.  I like that there is an option to run both versions of DS on the same server, but I am worried about my current stuff in DS 6.9.   I think I read somewhere that there is no migration tools for DS 6.9 to DS 7.0.  Does anyone know if DS 7.1 will have a migration tool?

Hi Wendy, No, we have used DS

Hi Wendy,

No, we have used DS for a long time. I wouldn't worry about your DS 6.9 stuff because it's in it's own database (eXpress).

I moved DS 6.9 from an older server to this new server that will serve as our main CMS 7 server. The eXpress database used to be on the same server, but decided to have it off-box. We've been running DS 6.9 on our new server that has DS 7 installed for a couple weeks and everything is good.

The only negative thing so far, which I'm pretty sure is due to having the eXpress database off-box, is there seems to be more lag in the Deployment Console sometimes. However, I just found out that they mismatched the port and NIC on the database server, so maybe once they fix that the console performance will be normal.

Hi Thanks for the info.  I

Hi
Thanks for the info.  I will try your suggestions in a test environment.  Did you upgrade from NS6 to CMS7 as well?  If yes, any problems you came across?  I have been reading through docs and it seems like there are a lot of steps you have to take to insure the migration goes well.

We will be upgrading from NS6

We will be upgrading from NS6 soon. I'm thinking of starting fresh on the new CMS 7 server and not importing anything over from the old server. I like these opportunity to press the reset button and not carry over any old junk from the previous system.

You are going to recreate all

You are going to recreate all of your software apps, reports, custom inventory, etc?  That sounds like a lot of work.  Good luck.  If you change your mind and decide to import/export, please share your results.  8)

Yeah it's extra work, but

Yeah it's extra work, but it's a good chance to audit the infrastructure as you re-create it. And, it's the perfect opportunity to redesign everything to take advantage of changes and features of the new version. In my experience, migrations and upgrades tend to introduce issues that a clean setup won't have--if you can arrange to start fresh. I'm thinking only half of what's in our current system is really in use anymore, and of that, a lot can be re-invented to be smarter this time around.
