Introducing "ideas" on Symantec Connect
Created: 22 May 2009 | Updated: 04 Dec 2009 | 43 comments
You may have already noticed our newest feature on Connect, Ideas. The concept is simple, we are proving a place where the community can suggest ideas for new features in Symantec products, new products altogether or even ideas for how Symantec as a company could change. You can even suggest ideas for Connect. Once an idea is submitted, community members can vote that idea up or down. The page defaults to list ideas that are "popular now" at the top of the list. So as you vote you increase the visibility of various ideas. Take a look and let us know what you think - in fact, submit some ideas for how we can improve Symantec Connect!
The short video below will show you around ideas.

For Symantec Endpoint Management KB (formerly Altiris KB) we push a few "FEATURE REQUEST" we can subscribe, but not talking about... So I can publish them in there also, for comment & temper taking ;-)

Can we get better filtering of articles i.e. per solution rather than per suite please? That would really help in isolating the relevant info... Thanks
R
Thanks for the suggestion, ricodjs - can you be more specific as to what you mean by solution and suite? Maybe give an example of what you are seeing on connect and how you'd like to see it organized. Also, you might try submitting it as an idea and tag it with the product 'Symantec Connect" then other community members can see and vote on your suggestion.
Peter,
I think he means that he would like to be able to sort ideas by product type. Like just "backup exec" ideas or "SEP" ideas. Right now under "all products" I only see "General Symantec" & "Symantec Connect". The 'all versions' to the right makes me think there perhaps might be plans to add specific products to the "all products" drop down so that you can choose specific products. Is that correct?

James, it sounds like you are looking at the ideas tab while in the "Inside Symantec" community. If you change the drop-down community selector at the top left of the page to "All of Connect" and then click on the "ideas" tab you will see that we do have ideas areas for all our products, organized by community. The only two "products" in the Inside Symantec community are "General Symantec" and "Symantec Connect." The ideas for other products are in the other communities. Does that make sense?
An example would be to provide filters by Patch Management, Inventory, Deployment, Software Management, or pcAnywhere solutions versus Client Management Suite.
I would like to see great granularity in the control allowed to Limited Administrators in SEP. I recently posted on this topic and it didnt gather much steam.
I am not sure if my organization is representative of many others, but here we have a Systems group and a Desktop group. I manage all of the back end and work closely with the Desktop group to resolve any client issues. We want to allow limited control of the SEP console to the Desktop group. While its good that I can grant them control over the desktop environment and restrict them from seeing any of our servers, I also would like the ability to control it a littler further.
For example, there are currently 3 levels of Administrators (System Admin, Admin, and Limited Admin). Currently you can only grant a Limited Admin group rights of Full Control, Read-Only and No Access. This doesn't really work for our environment. I would like to be able to further restrict if they could create or delete groups, import an OU or container, assign install packages, etc.
Your best bet for visibility on this suggestion is to submit this as an Idea - that way the SEP product managers and community members will be able to see this suggestion and vote on it.
Thanks Peter I will do that
Hi,
Maybe I can put this on the ideas page too - the forum articles can't be sorted. IE says Java error.
I tried it from two different PCs, got the same result, I don't think it's problem with my PC.
The forum articles will only show up sorted by recent post only, I can't sort any other way, I'm missing the recent posts.

Thanks Abesama - this is a bug affecting only Internet Explorer that we discovered recently. We are testing a fix on our development server now and will roll it out to production shortly.
My SLP does backup to VTL then duplication from there to physical tape.
When the duplication portion of the SLP job runs, it first allocates a drive then tries to allocate a tape. If that tape is in use it waits, active - which keeps the drive locked up.
I would like the SLP scan controlled by parameter DUPLICATION_SESSION_INTERVAL_MINUTES in LIFECYCLE_PARAMETERS to check which source tapes each duplication job would require, then determine if these tapes are already active - and prioritize the jobs using inactive tapes first. Perhaps this could be an optional command.
Having a bunch of duplications queued waiting for tapes while others could run causes me pain...
NBU 7.0.1 on Solaris 10
writing to EMC 4206 VTL
duplicating to LTO5 in SL8500
using ACSLS 7.3.1
Wise for Windows:
Add common dialogs to the installer that allow the USER to choose:
Yea, I know you can do the above by custom writing your own extensions, but these are such common things to do that someone should not have to write them custom. Also, by including them as part of the installer, you can "roll back" when un-installing.
No matter if i run a full time scan or quick scan i get a run time error how do i fix that problem?
If you've got a technical question I'd recommend posting it in the forums rather than on this blog post about the Ideas section of connect.
this is the best way to rapidly know if something needs to be done ASAP..
just hope that the community could find the time to check the new ideas so that the admins could weight if the sound suggestion is accepted by the group unanimously...
Lets help by participating...
thanks...

I suggest that new ideas would stay near the top for a few days for those who visit to be able to rate them before being ranked and maybe lost in the next pages because of the zero approval.

I have a feeling that some other posts/comments about the new Ideas tab aren't being seen by the folks that run the connect site. I'll past the link here in the hopes that they can improve on the Ideas area.

Peter, great job on this! I remember you talking w/ me about this before and am very impressed at not only the concept and design, but the implementation itself.

Many big media companies are looking for Archive systems.
They need to store large amounts of data for long periods, allmost infinite time.
The data is only periodically used again, maybe once every two years or so.
Most companies are using SAN's or something similar.
I am not talking about backups, but about archiving finished projects like complete video edits.
But with HD video coming up, it's going to be a mess.
Data amounts will grow too big and energy costs are going up.
Keeping rarely used libraries on spinning server discs is stupid.
Tapes are far more economical and green for such purposes.
USB hard-discs are not reliable enough, even when they are cheap.
I've seen them die in many important occasions.
My LTO drive once died, but of my tapes can still be read.
I am mis-using a LTO drive and BackupExec to do the job myself.
However, BackupExec is extremely user-unfriendly and not really designed for the task.
You need to use two asterixes in the search function, one before and one after the query, to find anything in the catalog.
Also, if tapes are not put into media sets, appending is next to impossible.
I found this out after many years of experimenting, because the manual is written by alien nerds who should be launched of the planet.
I'm a user, not an ICT guy, but still I need to shove large amounts of data.
So, every couple of years I ask for Archive Master, the fantastic Archiving system by Symantec.
Let's hope someone at R&D wakes up from their coma and starts making money with this simple idea.
Just use the LTO tapes like USB drives and improve the catalog search function and catalog backup function.
(The BackupExec catalog exists of so many silly parts, that I never managed to restore one without catalogging all tapes again and again.)
A function to write things on two tapes (mirror) would be nice too.
Hi Team,
Please check my proposal and comment...
this is a good idea that i hope to share with all of you...

Hello, I would like to see some statement from Symantec regarding the future direction of, and support for the Wise Installation Studio. Version 7 has been out for several years now without major upgrades, enhancements, etc. and no mention of the future of the product from Symantec. I would imagine that I am not the only one in this forum who would like to see this information.

I like to see this level of community involvement. Allowing members to vote the ideas up or down is a move in the right direction. casino en ligne
*** Just realised I should have posted in the Ideas area elsewhere .. doh! ... doing that now.
If include someting like a google serch in to symantec page.... when I´m loking for tech note it is quickly from google, if you try into symatec it take more minutes to find exactly you are looking for....
Someon able to provide me Veritas Netbackup 6.5 for windows interview question..??
Akashnaik,
If you know the software, you should have no problem answering questions related to its usage or management....right?
Thanks,
Kyle

Good Lord, this new forum is hideous. Searching is too global and I dont see anyway to narrow it down...if I start out in the Netbackup forum and do a search, why am I seeing results from every other forum?
The old layout was more intuative, user friendly and at times a huge help. Now I just get frustrated here. :(
This forum has more and irrelevant info than I want to deal with. I just wanted to find out if Norton was doing anything about Windows 7. The "communities" do not meet my needs. Thanks anyway.
This community is for business customers - to find out about consumer questions (Norton) you'll want to visit the Norton forums: http://community.norton.com/norton/
Excellent...
I'd still like to see the ability to search by product again. I get a alot of irrelevant hits.
Also this site loads much slower than it's previous but still is an extremely handy site!
Thanks.
We'll be addressing both of those requests shortly. Search by product should be available within the next week and we are upgrading the hardware on our servers as we speak.

For Norton-related questions, please visit the Norton community forums (http://community.norton.com/norton/) . This website is primarily for Symantec's business products.
As you may have noticed, the updated search functionality is now live. We're still making a few tweaks to the interface, but the functionality is there. Let us know what you think.
Peter
Peter, I love this new search function, it helps really users to looking for something published in the past. Good idea to add the Filter by.. Type, Product, etc.
Really a good job Peter!
Regards,
Paolo
Wow that's great.
how about when i click on a link in somebody's post it opens a new tab or window? when i type out a response to a post and then refer back to a document or link that may have been posted i loose what i typed in every time.
Why not just right-click and "Open in new window/tab" or middle click (Firefox/IE8)? Then you won't lose what you have typed.
Thanks,
Kyle

Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager is not able to send Email Notifications through a SMTP Mail Server that requires Secure Password Authentication. There is no option for SSL. This has been a known issue that should be fixed as more ISPs are moving to requiring SSL.
You will want to post this suggestion in the "Ideas" section of the Endpoint Management community. (Click here.) Your suggestion will get more visibility and attention there.
