Invalid Product Key Fix

Went to use my computer the other day, found all of a sudden that the Altiris Virtualization failed saying "Invalid Product Key". Scratching my head, I blew all layers off the system, and removed SVS. Tried to re-install, still no luck.

Turns out the whole thing was caused by the date and time of the system. My date accidentally got set back to around 1984 by mistake, and I didn't notice it.

Put the date back, and SVS started working fine again.

So if you see "Invalid Product Key" appear, you really otta check the date and time on your computer before you start tearing it apart.

Note from the support team: The licenses do have a start time and if the clock is set to before this time, this is exactly what will happen.

The system clock mysteriously getting set back to 1984 is usually a sign of a failing CMOS battery. Sometimes this battery can be replaced.

Good info for testers

Thanx. It's good info for those who do a lot of testing on their systems. But I still think as SVS is free to all, then there should be no restriction if clock time is set back.

SVS 2.0 is US $29/node MSRP

SVS is free for personal use only. For any organizational use (including government, education and non-profit), you must purchase a license from Altiris or an Altiris partner. For the small business, or for the individual who wishes to use SVS for work, it is available in single-node increments. Quantity discounts are applied for purchases larger than 999 nodes.

To find a reseller near you, or to contact Altiris directly, click on the "How to Buy" link on the top menu at www.altiris.com.

Educational Discounts

We do have educational discounts, and the definition for that is rather broad. Not sure what the options are for other non-profits...

Non-Profits

Novell used to have a site where non-profits could basically petition for a donation of software licenses. Kind of like a mini grant proposal. A certain number got approved each quarter, and of course Novell got a tax deduction for them. Dunno if they are still doing that, but Altiris should be doing something along those lines. I'll see what exists and get back to you, and/or pitch this concept up the chain.

What I found out...

Altiris does not currently have separate pricing or a donation program for non- or not-for-profit organizations. I'll find out who ran the Novell program (it was outsourced) and see what I can do here. Thanks for bringing it up!

Check with their partners

After doing research I will tell you your best bet is to check with Altiris' partners HP and Dell for the price they can give you. It's really quite good for education.

Don't forget services and training

License cost is only 1 factor to consider in the equation. Professional Services and Training are paramount to a successful implementation of Altiris if you plan on taking full advantage of the investment.
