KB.ALTIRIS.COM is dead, now place for the change

Sep 20, 2010 07:06 PM

I was trying to find the latest release notes (and latest version) for SMP 7.0...

And see the https://KB.ALTIRIS.COM is now out of order and replaced with http://www.symantec.com/business/support

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hum... As any normal human, I am under the "temptation" to find any reason to reject this change, because want to retain its old habits !!!

But, honestly, without "changing", our world does not have any meaning.

So let's have a look...

Hum:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=answers&startover=y&question_box=release+note+CMS+7&product_finder=Altiris&productselectorkey=not_set&myclicker.x=8&myclicker.y=1

I take a look in the "select a product", as recommend the web page: And... I do not find any "Symantec Management Platform" or "Altiris Client Management" :-(, only find:

And in a "glorious" patchwork, also:

It is not stupid Idea to separate them, because some be able to sold as a single solution. But do we need really such a "mess" ???

More over: I often sell CMS 7... But never find "Altiris Client Management", not more THE Symantec Management Platform (only announced from 2 years as the future Symantec Console...)

Well, this is seems just a "temporary bug", I am pretty sure we will get a fix soon ;-)

  • I suggest you create "sub-pages" with Client Management and all well known "Suites", to avoid some "confusions".

Coming back my search "quest":

As usual, I do not provide the good question, let's search again

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=answers&startover=y&question_box=latest+release+notes+Symantec+Management+platform+7&product_finder=Add+a+product+for+best+results&productselectorkey=not_set&myclicker.x=7&myclicker.y=8

Better result... Must see the DOC1737

I also try to use the such famous: (but I am afraid about the "life expectancy")

http://www.altiris.com/support/documentation.aspx

Give again the original KB number 45141 ...

Gives also the same redirection to DOC1737

Ouf !!

Well: Except "Documentation" talking about a SP5 version, not existing in the DOC1737 ! :-(

And mostly I need to search, and open about 4 others pages before getting the good one, that is

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/resources/sites/BUSINESS/content/live/HOW_TO/9000/HOWTO9965/en_US/SMP_Platform_Support_Matrix.pdf?__gda__=1285021814_7b74c59b537d72ad90869c9bee6794f2

ouf...

And finally get answer not really sure...

OK I put again the good question:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=answers&startover=y&question_box=Symantec+Management+platform+7+SQL+server+2008+support&product_finder=Add+a+product+for+best+results&productselectorkey=not_set&myclicker.x=0&myclicker.y=0

and I get a better answer, directly in the 2nd line: My real question in fact:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO26164&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1285022125714

So, for the moment, I have to "adapt" and "open" a little more my mind !

And never forget the essential: A KB must answer quickly a question, and provides in a few click the information we are searching for.

If Symantec can provides quickly "the good" information, I will be a "fan" any change. I will not go more in depth new KB now, wait and see later on ;-)

OK see the legacy ID is coming back into the Article from SYMWISE, so Oye Oye, if getting an old ID, you can look for old ID: do not use KB123456, only 123456

here it is in the end any article:

Legacy ID

19216

Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO2131

Also see the Product version tags are now available, so we can filter, except, we must avoid too much filtering, because most of the time, tags are not up to date...

So please Symantec, just take care when we click "feedback" and notify must add SP3, sp4, sp5 this KB... I don't see any effect my feedback, so I wonder if I loose my time to try !

Hi Symantec.

Please also update your initial contact e-mail when I log a support case. It contains the following:

SYMANTEC ONLINE RESOURCES:
Altiris Knowledgebase and Common Topics: https://kb.altiris.com/

 ***NOTICE:
Altiris Knowledge Base (https://kb.altiris.com)
Symantec Connect (Juice) (http://www.symantec.com/connect/endpoint-management-virtualization)

These URLs need updating.

Hello,

I must say we loose an important feature from KB.ALTIRIS.COM

We were able to "scope" a search inside a version, for the same solution.

We would like to be able to filter at least, the major version (6 or 7), but also the minor (7.0 or 7.1). And from time to time, the build version. also.

It is a just a shame to mix all searching result DS6 and DS7 without being able to activate a quick link to remove undesired version

Thanks for your feedback. Will will be adding this enhancement to the next release cycle of SymWISE (currently targeted for Mid-November).  See this other thread for additional information https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/altiris-knowledgebase-moved-symwise.

If Symantec remove the KB.ALTIRIS.COM

We will loose all valuable existing informations, White papers, Articles, news, and other KB...

Because the old KBnumber is not indexed the new SYMwise...

Not a wise decision I mean...

question: Does Symantec will keep alive the KB.ALTIRIS.COM, next 5 years ???

Sep 28, 2010 04:36 PM

Symantec  remove all migrated KB, and keep a few one in there (all the Feature Request) are still there.

To jump in a black hole ???

Sep 27, 2010 03:43 PM

eg. you see your subscription status each Article, and you can not any more subscribe other peoples, you wanted to (that is a nice thing, for undesired SPAM ;-)

Sep 26, 2010 09:39 AM

Seems only veritas catalog is available, do not see any altiris in the very long listing...

Here the message I received:

In an effort to improve the quality of your Support experience, Symantec is implementing SymWISE, our new Enterprise Support knowledgebase,

Because SymWISE contains a different Email Notification Subscription service, it is necessary for you to subscribe to the new Subscription service.  Note:   SymWISE also allows you to subscribe to Support Web sites via RSS feed, if your browser allows.

Your current Subscription services at the following links will not carry over and will no longer work after SymWISE launches:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/news_bulletins/index.jsp

http://maillist.entsupport.symantec.com

Information in SymWISE is organized into Channels.  The new Subscription service allows you to subscribe to a Channel.  To list a few of these Channels:

•     Technical Solutions - Contains all Knowledge base (KB) articles created from cases
•     How To – Product specific How To articles
•     Best Practices – Product specific Best Practice articles
•     Alerts – Product specific articles about critical technical issues and how to mitigate or resolve these issues.
•     Known Issues – Product specific Known Issue articles
•     Downloads – Product specific downloads, hotfixes, and service packs

To subscribe to the new Email Notification Subscription Services, you will need to have a SymAccount.  To create a SymAccount, refer to the following article:  http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/357940

Once you have a SymAccount, refer to the following article to set up and manage your Subscriptions:   http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/357941

Note the following:
•     It will not be necessary to unsubscribe or remove your previous subscriptions.  The old system will be shut down and decommissioned after the SymWISE launch.
•     Articles that you have bookmarked will re-direct for a few months.   Please remember to add the new bookmark to replace the old bookmark.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience through this transition.

Sep 23, 2010 10:49 AM

it is unusable

Sep 23, 2010 09:07 AM

eg.

Article 52539 has been migrated to SymWISE. Please update your favorites/bookmarks as needed using the URL below and click here to continue to this article.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=login&rp=content&id=S:TECH127397

no way... search TECH127397 not better !

It is a pity the new Symwise does not integrate the KBnumber in reference (not indexed)...

Sep 23, 2010 09:04 AM

By eg. The release notes from Deployment Solution 7.1

that is from a fresh updated CMS7 install (help library)

Deployment Solution
Provides image backup, restoration, and personality migration.
Deployment Solution Release Notes (Web)

https://kb.altiris.com/display/1n/kb/article.asp?aid=49800

Because this link is not valid -

crying

replacing manually (the kb number) with - https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=49800, working better

redirect to

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC1954

Sep 23, 2010 05:02 AM

FYI, if you clic the link in the KB redirection to Symwise, and getting the "home" page instead of the redirected article. Just back & play the link again. It works on second try (for me)...

Sep 22, 2010 02:33 PM

Jesus, they took it offline !!!!!!!!!!!

How are we gonna survive without the KB, that symantec base is way off...

Sep 22, 2010 06:01 AM

As for the https://kb-secure.altiris.com, I wonder how long it will be alive....

Sep 21, 2010 05:06 PM

Hello,

for those having ELITE access:

https://kb-secure.altiris.com

The KB is still surviving in there. But how long time ?

Sep 21, 2010 03:31 AM

you have hit the mail right on it's head...

You are right: change never comes in one step at the right point.  So let us give Symantec some slack here to really make the change, for the better ;-)
