Sep 08, 2016 09:00 AM

The Latest Intelligence page has been refreshed through August 2016, providing the most up-to-date analysis of cybersecurity threats, trends, and insights concerning malware, spam, and other potentially harmful business risks. Here are some key takeaways from this latest batch of intelligence.

The number of new malware variants reached 45.5 million last month—the highest level seen since August 2015. This is likely due to an uptick in click-fraud activity seen during August surrounding the Trojan.Kotver family of threats.

The Neutrino toolkit topped the list of web attacks by toolkit again this month, although it decreased 7.6 percentage points in August to 13.9 percent of all activity. The Angler toolkit declined another 2.7 percentage points in August to 4.3 percent, though it remained in second place. The number of blocked web attacks decreased in August to 415,000 per day. The decline in web attacks is likely connected to the declines in major toolkit activity.

The phishing rate decreased in August, down to one in 3,317 emails—the lowest phishing rate seen since February. The Public Administration sector saw the highest phishing rates in August at one in 1,803 emails. The Manufacturing sector, which topped the list last month, saw phishing rates drop to one in 5,372 emails. With one in 2,806 emails, organizations with 1-250 employees had the highest phishing rate.

The number of new Android variants per malware family appears to have leveled off in August. This is the first time since last October that the rate hasn’t increased month-on-month. There were no new Android malware families discovered in August, further pointing to a decline in Android-related malware activity in August.

These are just a few items that stood out during the month. Be sure to check out the Latest Intelligence for August 2016 for more charts, tables, and analysis covering the threat landscape.
