Latest Intelligence for September 2016

The Latest Intelligence page has been refreshed through September 2016, providing the most up-to-date analysis of cybersecurity threats, trends, and insights concerning malware, spam, and other potentially harmful business risks. Here are some key takeaways from this latest batch of intelligence.

The RIG toolkit was the most active web attack toolkit in September, up more than 21 percentage points to 24.6 percent. The Neutrino toolkit, which topped the list of web attacks by toolkits for the last few months, decreased 1.9 percentage points in September to 12 percent of all activity.

The number of new malware variants rose again in September, reaching 50.1 million last month, the highest level seen in the last 12 months. The email malware rate also increased, reaching one in 113 emails in September. This is the third month in a row the email malware rate has increased and the highest rate seen since January. The email malware rate also increased across industries and all organization sizes in September.

The global spam rate increased slightly in September, from 53.1 percent in August to 53.4 percent. The Construction sector again had the highest spam rate, increasing 2.6 percentage points to 62.2 percent. Small businesses with 1-250 employees had the highest spam rate in September.

The phishing rate increased slightly in September, to one in 3,127 emails. The Mining sector saw the highest phishing rates in September at one in 726 emails. The Public Administration sector, which topped the list last month, saw phishing rates drop to one in 2,188 emails in September. With one in 1,544 emails, small businesses with 1-250 employees had the highest phishing rate again this month.

Manual sharing continues to dominate social media scams, though it declined 8.2 percentage points in September to 75.27 percent.  In contrast, Fake Offers increased 5.11 percentage points during the month of September, up from 11.51 percent in August to 16.62 percent.
