Finally got Image deploy to work where it would take the computer name in the console!
It starts with Using ghost(Which is crap IMO). Then Using Symantec's built in Capture image job, then deploy. And you have to use 64bit PE because there is a known issue where 32bit PE does not have Firm which causes the unattended.xml to not get copied, and the job would hang and fail after imaging.
So today, more image testing with 32 bit, and throwing out all the great logic we had planned with this product.
Original logic:
Image x -> Script in the correct agent installer(hierarchy) -> Copy local all base sw -> Boot to windows and use unattend.xml to install all software and agent.
Now it's back to:
Ghost-> Tasks->
So the big hurdle. Since Ghost is doing it's thing in the back ground, we have no way to manipulate the agent(It configures to the aprents server the image was captured on). So does this mean in a Hierarchy, we need a 32bit and 64bit image on each NS?
Why do I feel like this is taking a step backward?
Yeah I cant wait to go to WIM, but I would need some knowledge of the mechanics in the back end that allows the tokens to be passed correctly.
yes, i probably could, but somewhat unrealistic deadlines had been set and to meet them without spending money on a consultant firm, we went with as much known tech as possible. still meant a lot of weekend and night work.
next time we redo our image, maybe this summer, it will most likely be a WIM.

Why cant you use ImageX and Wim's? If you are using DS 6.9 then you can use the WinPE editor to create your scripted installs, call the Token forPXEserver and Computername. And your home free?
it's a huge step backwards since you aren't using WIM and thus every time you want to patch your image, you actually have to crack it open and re-sysprep it and all that, versus just using the MS tools to inject the patches and calling it a day.
of course since i'm not using imagex/WIM in ds 6.9 i have to do that too, but at least i knew that going in. i wasn't teased with all of wim's benefits for a while before i had to revert to older tech.
