MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – September 4, 2012 – Symantec Corp. announced that its NetBackup 5220 appliance has won the Finalist Award in Best of VMworld 2012 in the Data Protection and Business Continuity category.

Happy Birthday to NetBackup 5220! It entered the market for purpose built-backup appliances in August 2011. In a year, this young product based on the time tested and proven NetBackup platform has won four industry awards.

  1. Storage Magazine/SearchStorage.com Product of the Year 2011 Bronze in Backup Hardware category
  2. Winner of Best of Microsoft TechEd 2012 in Backup and Recovery category
  3. Winner of THE STORRIES IX Storage Award 2012 for Storage Innovator of the Year
  4. Finalist Award in Best of VMworld 2012 in Data Protection and Business Continuity category

The latest award from VMworld 2012 puts Symantec as the winner for the most number of awards in the Data Protection and Business Continuity category. Symantec has won or been a finalist at VMworld 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012.

Another highlight is that judges for both Best of VMworld and Best of Microsoft TechEd highlighted the virtual machine backup capabilities in NetBackup, powered by Symantec V-Ray technology.

“… particularly impressed with the new V-Ray technology, which breaks down virtual versus physical silos and delivers simple yet comprehensive backup and recovery. This unification allows for more standardization and consistent policies, and reduced duplication of effort, eliminating redundant storage pools and lowering licensing, training, and operational costs. “  - Judges, Best of Microsoft TechEd 2012

“NetBackup 5220 changed the way enterprises think about backup appliances”, said Abdul Rasheed, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Symantec. “Customers are no more interested in putting a backup storage device behind an existing backup server. They would rather have the entire data protection stack deployed in appliance form factor for ease of management and support. This innovative appliance put Symantec in a fast track to gaining market share in purpose built-backup appliances. We were nowhere in this market two years back. Now we are on our way to becoming No: 3.”
