Disclaimer:

This information is about pre-release software. Any unreleased update to the product or other planned modification is subject to ongoing evaluation by Symantec and therefore subject to change.

This information is provided without warranty of any kind, express or implied.  Customers who purchase Symantec products should make their purchase decision based upon features that are currently available.

The NetBackup 7.5 Beta program kicked off October 27th with an introductory webcast for any interested Beta participants.  A replay will be available to Symantec Connect's NetBackup 7.5 Pre-GA group (it's a private group, so sign up for the Beta to get access).  If you haven’t signed up for the Beta program, please feel free to do so here: https://symbeta.symantec.com/login.html.  The program will focus on validating the quality and effectiveness of five key areas of the upcoming release; NetBackup Replication Director, NetBackup Accelerator, NetBackup Search,V-Ray Virtualization support, and our Cloud Connectors.  Those customers willing to assist us in this venture may even be rewarded (yes, iPads and Apple TV's are on offer!).

NetBackup 7.5 brings with it several new signature features. NetBackup Replication Director is NetBackup’s ability to easily manage NAS snapshotting and snapshot replication through NetBackup’s Storage Lifecycle Policies.  NetBackup Accelerator is our next generation backup agent technology that enhances your data reduction capabilities on top of what our source side deduplication offers.  NetBackup Search enables NetBackup users to easily discover files or folders that have been backed up and then do something cool, like put the backup containing those files on Legal Hold.

In addition to these signature features, we’ve also improved existing features like our virtual machine protection.  NetBackup’s V-Ray capabilities have been expanded and now enable NetBackup users to continue leveraging API driven single pass backups of VM’s, but then also perform GRT restores of certain applications and databases found within them (on top of the GRT restores of files and folders you’re used to), all while deduplicating that data against like data found in other physical or virtual environments.

We’ve also expanded our partnerships for cloud backup storage.  With NetBackup 7.1 we delivered support for storing backup data off premise in the Nirvanix cloud.  NetBackup 7.5 delivers three more big names in the Cloud Storage space through our Cloud Connectors; AT&T, Rackspace and Amazon.

Please join the NetBackup Product Management team and other interested customers and partners.  We need your help.  Sign up for the Beta program today and get to play with the great new features coming in NetBackup 7.5!

Any talk of adding Internap Cloud Storage in the future?

We're open to additional cloud storage providers.  I can't speak definitively about whether or not we'll add Internap Cloud Storage in the future.  All vendors are welcome to join the Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP) here: http://www.symantec.com/partners/programs/technology-partners/#netbackup.  If you would like them to join our program, please encourage them to do so.

That I think OpsCenter should be a focus area as it lacks a lot to be really useful in our opinion and to be on par with VBR and the competive products in the market.

We continue to develop and add functionality to OpsCenter.  OpsCenter is a continuing focus area for us, but not a focus area for this Beta.  I hope that makes sense.

Dave Little, one of Symantec's senior most NetBackup champions said recently, the Operational Restore functionality added to OpsCenter in 7.5 is one of the best features to be added to NetBackup in years.

If you'd like to further discuss OpsCenter offline, please send me a private message.

Actually it does not make sense. Either it is a focus area or it is not a focus area.

Michael - A number of improvements were made in OpsCenter in the 7.1 and in the upcoming 7.5 release. The fact that it is not a focus area for the beta/early release testing efforts doesn't mean that changes made might not be beneficial to you. This is why Jed made an open offer to give you a 1-1 update on what's new in OpsCenter in 7.5 and to provide an avenue to solicit your feedback and comments.  Why not take him up on the offer?

Opscenter Analytics 7.1 is still a long way from VBR in what you can report on. None of the new things search and restore mean much if it cannot do the reports you need and do them correctly

I have, but he has not answered my mail neither here or on the veritas-bu mail list.

I would agree that a great deal more focus needs to be applied to Opscenter.  Especially in the area of performance.  Many of the canned reports take more effort to modify than it is to go directly into the schema and write some custom SQL.  There are many areas that I like with the improvements, but it still needs to be much snappier.

You mentioned performance, but it seems that your example is more about configuration.  Can you please clarify which is more important, "snappier" reports, or easier configuration?

Thank you.

The software is available to download on the Symbeta site, which you should already have a link to if you're part of the beta program.

Birendra Kumar,

The launch video is here:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/videos/netbackup-75-product-management-lead-beta-launch-video-5-min-summary

There was talk of recordings of each of the new product features (which I would like to see posted here as I'm outside of Americas timezone so time they were run wasn't really that great for me). I'm hoping to see them posted soon as I'm sure I'm not the only one who missed the live presentations but would like to see the detail - anyone seen them posted yet?

Those videos have been made available to members of the Beta group, but they're simply and introduction to the testing we're looking for testers to do for us.  Your recommendation is being considered and next time around we should have some more detailed feature intro's for each of the new portions of the product.

There are some bandwidth limiters in NetBackup put in many releases ago, and still available in NetBackup 7.5,

The parameters are described in the Symantec NetBackup Administrator's Guide, Volume 1.  Please see the section entitled "Throttle Bandwidth properties."  Here's an excerpt from a pre-release documentation draft to give you an idea about the capabilities.  Sorry in advance for the formatting or if this has already been answered.

-Chris Birkholz

Throttle Bandwidth properties

Use the Throttle Bandwidth properties to specify a limit for the network

bandwidth or transfer rate that NetBackup clients use on a network. The actual

limiting occurs on the client side of the backup connection. These properties limit

only backups. Restores are unaffected. The default is that the bandwidth is not

limited.

The ThrottleBandwidth properties are similar to the Bandwidth host properties,

but offer greater flexibility in IPv6 environments.

To manage entries in the Throttle Bandwidth dialog box, select one of the

following buttons:

Add a network or host to the Networkor Host list using the Add

Bandwidth Settings dialog box.

Change the selected network or host property using the Change

Bandwidth Settings dialog box.

Add Bandwidth Settings dialog box for Throttle Bandwidth properties

The Add Bandwidth Settings and the Change Bandwidth Settings dialog boxes

Network or Host The network or host to which the throttle applies.

for the network or host indicated. A value of zero disables

So far I am less than impressed with the 7.5Beta2, installation does not work on a 2008 R2 cluster and the assigned SE is away for this last week of the program.

I have a native vSphere 5 deployment (still in test/dev with no production VM's).  I would really like to be a part of the beta if that's still possible.

I am interested if they put in any upgrade on SLP management like a gui management or more command line options?

I have heard that they will allow non-windows backup hosts for VMware backups, is that correct?
