Symantec tackles the problem of open file shares, data that everyone in the company has access to, with the release of Symantec Data Insight 3.0.1 this month. The new Data Insight release features several enhancements in the areas of reporting/dashboard and usability and supportability that several customers have been anticipating.

What is Data Insight?

Symantec Data Insight helps organizations improve data governance by managing unstructured data and understanding:

• Who owns the data
• How is the data being used
• How to best protect the data and maintain compliance

These insights into the data enable customers to manage data growth to reduce costs, protect the data, and manage compliance. Data Insight was also jointly developed by NetApp and Symantec, to discover and collect data activity and permissions in unstructured data.

Key highlights for Data Insight 3.0.1:

• Summary Dashboard: Global summary of the environment with metrics on data, activity and permissions including customizable open shares discovery
• Enhanced Reporting: New reports  in entitlements review and data ownership; report on file extensions (example: Show all PST files); improved filtering/scoping (example: Show activity of employees in marketing);  scale/performance optimizations
• Improved Supportability: Health check; health/scan summary dashboards
