IT organizations face hardware, software and database / application downtime, lasting short periods of time to shutting down the business for days on a regular basis. Without adequate planning and preparation, any type of downtime can compromise a return to operations and cause financial damage as the ability to generate revenue is lost. Most organizations anticipate that unplanned downtime can — and likely will — occur at some future time. But, in today's world, the need to ensure Web-enabled 24 x 7 x 365 access to key applications is paramount. Thus planning for operational continuity and recovery from outages is rapidly becoming an urgent priority for commercial and government entities alike.

New Symantec System Recovery 2013 - Generally Available Globally on 7th Jan 2013

I am delighted to announce that Symantec System Recovery 2013 is available from Monday 7th January 2013. Symantec System Recovery 2013 delivers superior backup and disaster recovery for servers, desktops, laptops, and virtual machines that enables businesses to recover from downtime or disasters in minutes. With patented Restore Anyware™ technology, IT administrators can rapidly restore exactly what they need, when and where they need it–including entire physical and virtual machines to bare metal or dissimilar hardware as well as files, folders, and granular application objects. Unlike other technologies, Symantec System Recovery also provides cross-platform Physical-to-Virtual (P2V), Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V), and Virtual to-Physical (V2P) recoveries, making it the perfect complement to physical and virtual environments.

The new and powerful features in this latest release further extend Symantec System Recovery leadership position in Disaster Recovery and Data Protection for all sizes of businesses. This new release includes support for the latest applications and operating systems, a new management solution for monitoring up to 100 clients, and faster backup windows by up to 750%.

Key new features in Symantec System Recovery 2013:

  • Support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8

  • Support for VMware vSphere 5.0 and 5.1

  • UEFI Support: Symantec System Recovery now enables boot from UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) in addition to BIOS.

  • 64 bit Support:  Full 64 bit support is now included.

  • Advanced Monitoring and Reporting: Symantec System Recovery Monitor is a new monitoring solution that's extremely simple to use and is FREE of charge to all Symantec System Recovery 2013 customers. It's a standalone and lightweight solution for managing up to 100 nodes. It’s simplicity and no extra dependency eliminates the learning curve for users. Intuitive GUI along with essential action controls provide crisp status along with ability to take desired actions seamlessly through the same view.

  • Smart Reconciliation:  Now Backups and reconciliation are efficiently done by smartly tracking changed blocks. The reconcile time is drastically reduced to seconds by eliminating the need to do a complete reconcile in cases of crashes or abrupt shutdowns. In addition, backups are now up to 750% faster.

                 - Incremental Backup without reconcile – At least 35% faster than Symantec System Recovery 2011

                 - Full Backup – At least 15% faster than Symantec System Recovery 2011

                 - Incremental Backup with reconcile – At least 750% faster than Symantec System Recovery 2011

  • Enhanced Symantec System Recovery Linux Edition: The Symantec System Recovery Linux Edition now includes the ability to perform incremental backups and schedule backup jobs.

We have received very positive feedback for SSR 2013 from beta and RC customers

I second this sentiment! The Beta testers were really delighted with how much faster the product was and how well it recovered from interupted incremental backups. No more of those long "reconciling" statuses on incremental backups that could sometimes occur if you power off or get a network disconnect mid-backup.

The new Monitor tool was well liked too as a simple app for seeing quick last-backup-status on up to 100 machines.

I'm not so mild-mannered about SSR 2013. I had the great hope that the known bugs of SSR 2010 are fixed in the new version but they aren't.

The biggest problem I have is the following bug:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH143704

I think that's the reason why my 3TB hard disk for backing up (this has 4kb sized sectors) isn't shown in System Recovery. And so I cannot configure anything (the status messages for example). In the whole operating system (Explorer, DOS-Box etc.) the drive is shown correctly and I can use it as usual. I can even backup to the drive but is everything working fine? I'm not sure!

Has anyone else similar problems?

When does this get released for bundled users that are apart of Symantec Advanced Business Edition 4.0 Bundle?

My maintenance is current on SSR.

When can I expect to get the upgrade notice with a new serial number to download the new version from the fileconnect site?

Hi ken,

You can still download the trialware and when you get the upgrade notification and license, you then activate it. It will still work as the licensed copy till the expiration of the trial period.

I got mine today.  I'm excited to see if the processing times are reduced.  And, a new tool to learn to use.  Hope it's worth it.

I downloaded the new version as soon as i got the licenses upgrade mailed.

I looked in the documentation for any notes on upgrading from 2011, but there seems to be nothing. Bit of a shame.
Will try to install anyway and see what happens.

You can upgrade. It's the same as it's always been - just run the installer and it will upgrade (i.e. you get the option to keep backups jobs/history etc).

Since Symantec System Recovery 2013 Management Solution is now installed via Symantec Installation Manager, please add the download of SIM to the FileConnect for System Recovery 2013. This would enable new customers to install the Management Solution quickly. Thanks!

The problem with this is that, if there is an updated version of the installation manager, the version on FileConnect will be out of date. It would be just another place to maintain it.

I wrote that article you referenced by the way..

Hi Ken -

A license key is not necessary while in the 60-day eval period. During that time, you will be able to backup, restore, offsite, etc. your test machine as long as you are backing up and restoring the same hardware - the restore to different hardware (RestoreAnyware) function is disabled in trial mode.

If you have any questions or run into any problems, please post into this forum:

You don't need to enable anything - this is there by default.

No support for Sharepoint 2013, any idea when that will be added?

I expetced the upgrade from 2011 to 2013 to add Server 2012 support (which it does) and current microsoft products like Exchange 2013 and Sharepoint 2013.

Chris, is there any further timescale on an SP2013 inclusion? Granular Recovery would be most excellent for this!

As a customer with current maintenance/support on a previous version of this product as of the release date, you are entitled to upgrade your supported licenses to this new release free of charge. I think so!

But some customers have issues downloading it from fileconnect. You can contact customer care in that case. They will give you a temporary serial number with which you can download the software.
