PortableApps or U3?
Filed under: Compatibility, Endpoint Management and Virtualization
What is the better or choice, or are they both worth having on the same media?
PortableApps has less software available, however, all of it is free. U3 has free, trial, and commercial software. U3 has most, if not all, of the software that PortableApps provides.
Is U3 going to be the standard, and has it stopped PortableApps in its tracks?
I grabbed myself the 4GB U3 drive from Juice Rewards and it now has most of the free software on it. I've also installed PortableApps on another 4GB memory stick.
For me, if PortableApps would have had more software, or if I would have known about it beforehand, then I probably would not have got a U3 drive.
What are your pros and cons about these technologies?
From my point of view,
From my point of view, even if I have a U3 drive from many time, I prefer to use an standard memory stick where I installed some portable apps.
One of my favourite is the PortableApps Suite that I consider fantastic, all my most used applications are in this suite and the last thing not less important is a open source project.

u3 is good
I run U3 a lot of times. I though one of the differences was that portable apps was free and U3 was licensed specially or had other issues like that.

A tool like VSA2EXE would be very nice!!
Why should you make a choice ?
As far as I'm concerned, I finally decided not to make a choice between U3 and PortableApps. I took the best of both.
Let me explain :
I have a Toshiba 4GB U3. On it I installed software downloaded from U3 portal.
In addition, as there was some software that was not available on U3 that interested me. So I first checked if they existed as 'portable apps' (they are easier to convert into U3), then I made my own u3p's.
So now on my U3 key you can find 'official' U3 apps (trillian, firefox...etc), portable apps transformed into U3 apps (VLC, Total Commander...etc) homemade u3 pack (Universal extractor, SVS admin & editor...) and, homemade u3apps (Shrek Monitoring ToolBox...)
Why should we choose when we can have all ?
U3
U3 is the only way to fly as it is a Hardware / Software standard and will be more generally applied accross the enterprise. Hopefully it is more widely accepted!! U3 has gotten a few hardware manufacturers behind it at this point!
