Processing Large NSE Files on Your Notification Server

Feb 11, 2009 01:38 PM

Recently, there was a NSE file generated that was huge (> 20MB) By default, a Notification Server will not process that NSE file. It will get automatically discarded, as the default configuration does not provide a mechanism for processing those XML files that are larger than 20 MB.

Well, provided you have the horsepower to do it, you can process those files and include that data into your Notification Server. More than likely this data might be a custom inventory or a huge software inventory.

CAUTION:

Making this change should be considered to be a temporary setting, as it can consume a large amount of memory. Please make sure that you also perform these changes at a slow processing time for you Notification Server, when there are few background processes running.

You will simply need to edit a registry key on your Notification Server. The key is called:

HKLM\Software\Altiris\Express\Notification Server\LargeQueueThreshold

This value is in kbytes, and you should set it to a value slightly larger than the NSE you will be posting to the queue. (Default is 20971520)

Then restart the Altiris Service.

You will then want to copy your NSE file into the EVTQueue folder, and it should be evaluated and show up in the process folder of the evtQslow folder. Once processed, it will disappear, and you data should then be available to report on in the NS.

Please remember to set the registry values back to defaults, as we don't want to process large files like this outside of a controlled environment.
