In the June 2012 Symantec Security Intelligence Report, Symantec measured the volume of targeted attacks for the first half of 2012 and found that the average number of attacks per day had increased by 24 percent.
With the increase of targeted attacks in today’s threat landscape, the ability to quickly apply custom rules that are tailored to an individual customer is now critical. This is where Symantec Messaging Gateway 10 comes in.
Symantec is the only vendor to offer Customer Specific Rules in the new version of Symantec Messaging Gateway, which provide fast, customizable defense against malicious email attacks with new and automated technologies that give customers more control of their messaging security and simplified management.
Customer Specific Rules in Symantec Messaging Gateway enable better email protection in their environment. Historically, email protection has been primarily driven by global rules where IP reputation (intelligence based on the message origin) and email content have been the primary drivers of spam rule creation.
Symantec Messaging Gateway uses a new in-product submission process that allows customers to automatically create custom rules which block new threats that would not have been previously caught at the email gateway – in as little as a minute from the time of submission. This new technology dramatically improves a customer's threat detection and prevention by being more aggressive while maintaining Symantec's very low false positive rate.
In addition, Symantec Messaging Gateway deepens its integration with Symantec Data Loss Prevention to help customers better control the flow of sensitive information outside their organization. Data Loss Prevention can now communicate directly with Messaging Gateway to manage quarantined messages. Synchronization allows the DLP administrator to remediate the message directly from the DLP console.
Symantec Messaging Gateway now also provides IPv6 support for control centers and scanners ensuring a smooth transition for organizations beginning their IPv6 implementation.

According to Virus Bulletin’s VBSpam comparative antispam testing, Symantec blocked 99.78 percent of spam in the most recent September 2012 assessment, earning its 17th consecutive VBSpam award. With the support of Symantec’s world-leading malware research team, Symantec Messaging Gateway draws on intelligence gathered from more than 3.5 million email decoy accounts and domains, 120 million devices and anonymous statistics from 8.5 billion email message per day, making it one of the largest networks of its type.
