Redmond Mag: Application Virtualization Hits Its Stride
Updated: 29 Jul 2010 | 2 comments
The editors at Redmondmag.com took a long look under the hood of SVS ... and another virtualization technology. Guess which one got higher scores?
Here's an excerpt:
The results are impressive once you've set up your system and installed the software layers and packages. As an ultimate compatibility test, I installed Office 2003 and Office 2007 on the same computer, and ran them both at the same time. There were no conflicts, and I could copy data back and forth between the two.

Very good article
Juicemaster,
Thanxs for sharing the article. I really enjoyed reading the article, and it contains good information. To bad that in the article there is a statement that SVS cannot virtualize printerdrivers. Just by adding some sys components makes printerdrivers also work virtualised. I did a lot of tetsing for the Dymo labelprinter, and i am very impressed of the functionality.
Take a look at a program called Daemon tools that is used a lot. It is a little program that let\s you mount a ISO file as a cd. The program has a sys file that needs to be loaded.
Create the package, and then search for the driver with the extension .sys.
Place this in the directory c:\windows\system32\drivers.
Reboot you're machine.
Activate the package, and it works.
Indeed then the sys file is not virtualized, but who cares.
Want to see some real strange behaviour?
Install the softgrid client on you're machine, and then install SVS.
The softgrid client will stop working.
Then de-install the softgrid client and create a VSA from the client. Activate this, and then get surprised. It works?

Erik

read the article
in my copy of Redmond and while they are tied (if I recall correctly), there was a huge edge in what the writer wrote for SVS, over the Landesk version. I'm curious if the person who wrote the article is the same as the person who gives out the criteria.
One of the things I learned is the landesk version doesn't install the icons to the Start Menu. It seems a little silly to me that doesn't happen automatically.
Anyways great jobs guys, keep up the good work
