I would like to figure out the best way to rename computers automatically with unigue names. As of right now, it is setup to give the serial number of the computer. I change the name in the DS console to fit the naming scheme. There has to be a way to start an image job and have it give the computer the correct name and join it to the Domain. As well as any new computers I role out.

Any advice on getting on the right track would be appreciated. I have looked into custom tokens, but having a hard time with it.

Renaming PC's automatically

Hi DParent

I do the same thing and have found that the easiest way around it was to create a script which runs in the startup. In essence what it does is a WMI query to get the BIOS serial and the via a DB call gets the appropriate name. It's easy to do it this way because we have a asset DB which records all such details before the new devices arrive from the vendor.

Cheers

J

Token replacement

Simply use the DS tokens in your Sysprep for the computername and have it equal the DS token for serial number. SERIALNUM if I remember correctly.

on our end here knowing that we have several site we name the computers like this.
SITE-COMPUTER NUMBER ( ex . CC1-001 ) there are a  lot of ways to name them just make sure it would be a lot easier for you to identify them just in case they woould be coming from different sites or location.
