Today it is common for projects to be completed not by an individual, but a team (including to create this blog post).  To allow for improved productivity and collaboration, people use cloud-based storage to share files quickly and easily.  A counterpoint to the desire to share is the need to protect confidential information from being accessed inappropriately and leaking sensitive data.

The need for a secure collaboration solution drove the Symantec Encryption team to develop an enhancement for our Symantec™ File Share Encryption, Powered by PGP Technology software.  The enhancement offers:

  • automatic encryption of files on managed Windows machines that are stored on Dropbox
  • seamless access to encrypted files on Windows machines and iOS devices
  • centralized management for Dropbox Cloud Encryption Policies via Symantec™ Encryption Management Server (SEMS)

Encrypting files before they are uploaded to the cloud storage provides end-to-end encryption, ensuring only authorized users have access to the sensitive information.  And the automatic encryption capabilities of File Share Encryption causes minimal impact on users – yes, a product with security at its core that is also unobtrusive to users.  Additionally, we wanted to provide the option for mobile productivity and ensure users of iOS devices can view encrypted documents from their iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch devices, a device list that will expand in future software versions.

Also, administrators set encryption policy so content like documents, spreadsheets, presentations, video, and audio are automatically encrypted when produced from selected applications or sent to specific folders.  Administrators set this policy on the same console they use to manage other Symantec Encryption products, allowing for quick deployment and low operational expense.

The new software version with the cloud storage protection enhancement is planned to launch in early 2013.  For more details on Symantec’s solutions for safe clouds, visit http://bit.ly/Uz6GUR.

Since you know what the team is working on now, what would you like to see as the next enhancement to our File Share Encryption product?    As I hold product management responsibility for our File Share Encryption product, I would love to learn what enhancements you would like to see in our software.  Post a comment, and let us know.

This is a good place where I can learn and tell my company about online storage and saving data from lossing as we have lost many of our PPI claim files during data shifting.
