Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 HotFix 2 has been posted to the Altiris Knowledgebase. This HotFix includes several stability fixes and is recommended for all SVS customers. This is a cumulative update, so includes everything from HotFix 1.

Details:

  • Workaround for a Microsoft registry defect that could result in a blue screen when certain registry functions are called
  • Fix for an IIS compatibility issue -- Note: IIS is still not supported in an SVS layer! However, a forthcoming release of Wise Installation Studio requires SVS and IIS to be installable together on the same PC.
  • Fixes for memory leaks that could result in impaired system performance over time
  • Fixes problem with printers becoming unavailable when print spooler restarted
  • Fixes blue screen when new USB device inserted on some machines

The SVS engineering team wishes to thank our colleagues at Microsoft for their fantastic cooperation in resolving the first issue! Altiris found the problem, and MS will be fixing it in Vista SP1.

The download under the KB article has everything listed as version 2.1.2083.

Isn't this suppose to be 2.1.2084?

Correction: The self extracting .exe has the correct .msi packed in it but the standalone .msi in the zip file is .2083

The MSI seems not to have been changed regarding build version.
The ProductVersion is still 2.1.2083 and the summary information (comment) also refer to the same build.

Either the version was forgotten to be changed or it's still the old version.

Non of the installed files has the new build (2084) version.
ex. fslx.sys, fsllib32.dll and SVSAdmin.exe still has version 2.1.2083.0.

Thanks for alerting us to this. We have the wrong build in the KB. You can get the correct build at www.download.com and www.svsdownloads.com. I'll have Support fix the KB ASAP!!!

The KB contains both the exe and msi. The exe was the right version all along. The msi is now also the correct version.

I apologize for any inconvenience.

I have indeed the correct version running now, and it shows that my memory consumption changed considerably.
Going to implement this version in a short while with our customer.

Kind Regards, FrankB

I am not sure the blue screen issue with USB is entirely fixed... Even with HF2 applied, we still see BSOD issues when redocking a laptop and after the discovery of a USB device...

A heads up that there will be a HotFix 3 for SVS 2.1. The changes in HF3 are isolated to the Altiris SVS Control Panel Applet. Several bugs in the CPA are fixed, with support added for runtime layers. HF3 is expected next month, around the same time as the release of Wise Installation Studio Express 7.0 SP1 (the release that enables software developers to distribute their products with SVS Runtime).

We expect HF3 to be the last update up for version 2.1. SVS 2.5 ("Medusa") will be next; details to be provided at ManageFusion in Orlando. Be there or be square!

Need to install this SVS HotFix and SVS as all the other solutions on our NS server are installed on drive "G:" instead of "C:".

Running the hotfix as is doesn't give me the ability to cahange install directory and doesn't appear to auto find and update exsisting SVS solution under G drive.

Probably something simple I'm missing with this but non-the-less I need help.

I apprecaite any assistnace you could give.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

There is a simple way to change paths.
Go to: http://juice.altiris.com/download/864/change-layer...

This little tool gives you the ability to change the default path.

The HotFix installer only updates the client, it does not update the solution install on your Notification Server.

Wow... little embarrassed now.

I just assumed it was a hotfix for the NS solution not the client-side agent.

Of course re-reading the KB article not sure how I missed it or what I was on that day.

thanks again,
Brian

We are working on improving the HotFix release process for SVS so, hopefully in the future, you will be able to download a solution update when a new client version is released.
