SVS 2.1 is Out the Door!

Admin's picture

The much anticipated release of Software Virtualization Solution version 2.1 has arrived. This release includes significant application virtualization enhancements, including Windows Vista support, and the addition of application streaming. Get download and purchasing information here.

Read the press release here.

More importantly, please read the Release Notes here.

New features in this release include:

  • Global Excludes – A popular request, Global Excludes allows you to configure excludes once instead of separately on each VSP.
  • Task Server Support – When installing SVS in Altiris Notification Server, Task Server support is now automatically set up.
  • Control Panel Applet - The SVS Agent now includes an optional "Altiris SVS" Control Panel Applet. This allows an end user with Admin privileges to view a list of VSP's on their machine, to do basic layer functions and to change SVS Agent configuration options.
  • Moveable Redirect Areas – In 2.0, using anything other than c:\fslrdr as the redirect area root was problematic and unsupported. Customers can now put their redirect areas on another local drive, or event put different layers in different places.
  • Layer Data is Retained on Uninstall – To reduce risk of data loss, un-installing the SVS Agent no longer automatically deletes all layers on the computer. An MSIEXEC command line option may be used to force deletion of layers at uninstall time.
  • A New WMI Provider – There is a new WMI provider with improved functionality. This is an additional provider and the legacy provider will still function with this release. (Note: The legacy provider will be deprecated in a future release.)
  • Additional Language Support – The SVS Agent has added support for the following additional languages: Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, and Russian. The SVS Solution on Altiris Notification Server added support for the following additional languages: Italian and Portuguese.
  • Runtime Mode – This allows software vendors to distribute their products in the Altiris VSP™ format, with SVS bundled, so that all customers can use the app virtualized, whether they own SVS or not. Software vendors will need to purchase a forthcoming release of Wise Installation Studio to create VSP’s with SVS runtime embedded.
  • SVS Logon Hook - The SVS Logon Hook allows SVS events to be triggered based on WINLOGON events. The main purpose is to provide user-customized environments when SVS is used with VMware VDI and HP CCI, but for other users this could allow you to configure a different set of layers as active when different users log on to a PC. Editor's Note: The SVS Logon Hook is provided as a separate download here (click on the drop down arrow).

Installation Notes:

SVS 2.1 may be installed over an existing SVS 2.0 installation. If you do this, before you upgrade, create a backup of pre-existing layers by exporting them. SVS 2.1 uses a new layer format. Existing layers will automatically be converted to the new layer format. However, there is no facility to revert layers to the 2.0 format should you need to roll back. Therefore, backing up layers prior to upgrade is very strongly recommended.

So?

This is a newer version then V2.1 Beta 1.6?

Yep

Beta 1.6 was build #2032

This final release is build #2069

I'm sure most of the changes made were bug fixes and code tuning.

Someone from the product team can chime in to let us know if any functionality was added at this stage (but it's doubtful).

V2.1 Beta 1.6

Is this version compatible with Vista?

Vista Support

I seem to recall that Vista support was added in SVS 2.1 Beta 2... ? I'm getting old and my memory is not good. Doesn't really matter, tho -- 2.1 is out of beta. Get the final version.

WoooHooooo!!!!

The SVS team rocks!! Thanks alot for all of your hard work and efforts. It is much appreciated.

FrankB's picture

Erhm...

It still shows 2.0 SP1 on the download page?

svsdownloads.com

It'll take a while before the new code is added to each of the download sites.

I just downloaded a copy (of the Personal use version) from http://www.svsdownloads.com

Thanks!

Could you check if it is release: #2069

svsdownloads.com is not really owned by Altiris.

Cheers, FrankB

Nevermind...

It is indeed the 2069 version.
A friend of mine checked it and it is the case, strange though that a non Altiris site can provide the new version and Altiris can't (yet). :)

Am I missing something?

Cheers, Frank

Individuals move faster

Individuals move faster than organizations... Especially when the individual is the lead developer's brother and the organization is 18,000 people in size...

Application streaming in SVS 2.1

The headline says "This release includes significant application virtualization enhancements, including Windows Vista support, and the addition of application streaming" but I cannot see application streaming listed in the features. Have I missed something?

Scott Jones's picture

SVS Pro

Streaming is a feature of SVS Professional. We'll get an eval and more info posted w/i a work day or two. [It was hard enough to get the regular SVS live today given seven distribution points (each with different procedures and response times) and both me and our QA lead on the road at MS TechEd in Orlando... ]

emmajp's picture

SVS Pro

Sounds like SVS Professional is not the one that just came out. What are the differences between the SVS Professional vs. the new SVS 2.1 version (Personal??) besides of course the application streaming??? And do you have a timeline of when Pro will be out??

Scott Jones's picture

Read the Press Release

Please read the press release linked to above. SVS Pro was also announced and is available for order. We just don't have an eval posted yet.

And no, there will be no free for personal use option with SVS Pro... Don't know many individuals who need a streaming system. If you do, you are invited to purchase @$55/node MSRP.

jfinnis20's picture

Very interested in Pro

The info on the streaming capabilities of Pro are few and far between. Please let us know when there will be documentation an evals available.

FrankB's picture

Dear Scott..

Thank you for your response within your busy schedule.
We'll wait until the forthcomming information is released.

Thank You, FrankB

Hi Scott,

the SVS Admin was also disabled.
I have updated from Beta 1.6 and install the Altiris SVS Applet manually. (From uninstall / remove)
This don´t work by me.

Now I have uninstall SVS and install new, this work.

Read the Release Notes

Aha... Well, you hit on a very annoying defect that we chose to ship with, and which is documented in the Release Notes.

When you modify or repair the SVS Agent in Add/Remove Programs, it deletes your license key and puts you in runtime mode. The fix is to re-enter the license key manually, which can be done on the command line, or in SVS Admin (Help > About > Register).

Thunder-man's picture

Add/Remove Programs

Ok THX,
I knew which, when I repair SVS the key gets lost.
Now also by Add/Remove/repair...

Now, however, the good one is easier SVS to install.
(only one Box for the Key) lol

I am glad to know that version 2.1 is compatible with Vista!

Wise Release Schedule

Does anyone know the expected or scheduled release date for the "forthcoming release of Wise Installation Studio?" I would like to utilize the embedded SVS runtime with our application.

Runtime Mode – This allows software vendors to distribute their products in the Altiris VSP™ format, with SVS bundled, so that all customers can use the app virtualized, whether they own SVS or not. Software vendors will need to purchase a forthcoming release of Wise Installation Studio to create VSPs with SVS runtime embedded.
