I always believe that the best salesman is a person who really believes that his product is the best.   One way to know about the product is to explore its features and its value for money.  I have been working in the Data Security Domain for quite some time now and have worked on many backup products.   Exploring different products has always been a fun.  In the previous organization that I was working, I got a chance to explore 3 best of the breed backup products.  My manager had asked 3 vendors to show the POC of these products.  One vendor presented and showed us a demo on IBM Tivoli, the other vendor showed us a presentation and POC on HP Data Protector and the third vendor showed us a presentation and POC on Symantec Netbackup. This is where I got the chance to know about the 3 best software’s that I knew of and it was time for us to decide the best software.  Our environment consisted of few Sun Solaris Servers running Oracle, few Linux application servers, Microsoft Exchange mail servers, MSSQL servers and few other applications servers.   We also had a Virtual Environment consisting of 5 Physical servers running about 15 Virtual machines in HA.

So I worked along with my manager and made a comparison of these products.  Once this comparison was done, our choice was unanimous.  Symantec Netbackup had an upper hand in most of the areas and there were no problems for us in choosing the best product suited to our environment.

After a year I decided to change the organization and moved to my current organization as I got a post of a Manager in Data Security.   My organization believed in virtualization and 60% of the production servers were in the form of Virtual Machines hosted on cluster of VMWARE INFRASTRUCTURE.  We had other servers in the form of Microsoft Exchange, SAP with Oracle database and many more.  But the thing that I was seriously missing was my Favorite Backup Software, Symantec Netbackup.  Here we were using HP Data Protector to backup the servers.   I was missing the features that I got in my previous organization.  And it was really a time for a change as the renewal of the HP software was due.  What happened next is very interesting and very gladly I can say that we changed to Symantec Netbackup.  What made us think that Symantec Netbackup was the best in the best of the breed software’s, how did we changed to Symantec Netbackup.....It would be an Interesting Story.
