Underscore Not Supported in Intel® AMT Hostnames

Intel® AMT hostnames are most often set to match the Guest Operating System (OS) hostname. In some production environments, IT operations are using an underscore "_" in their guest OS naming convention. This is viewed as an illegal name by Intel® AMT and according to RFC952.

Please refer to RFC952 (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc952.html) for industry standards on naming conventions. As quoted from that document:

"A 'name' (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up to 24 characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), minus sign (-), and period (.). Note that periods are only allowed when they serve to delimit components of 'domain style names'… No blank or space characters are permitted as part of a name. No distinction is made between upper and lower case. The first character must be an alpha character. The last character must not be a minus sign or period… Single character names or nicknames are not allowed."

Similar naming specifications or limitations can be found with DNS records, hostnames, mail server setups, etc.

Underscores in passwords

AMT also does not allow an underscore in the password. FYI currently Altiris allows you to enter a password for AMT that contains an underscore, which then fails to apply via USB provisioning.

sfaucher,

Thanks for the heads up. I will research the issue and raise it with development.
