In the spirit of openness that a community site like this is built on I want to take a minute to address a few things related to the launch of Connect. Specifically, I want to talk about two things:

  1. Status of bug fixes
  2. What the future holds

STATUS OF BUG FIXES

In the first few hours and days of the launch we (and you) identified a number of bugs with the site.  It would be disingenuous to ignore that they happened or to downplay how they have affected what you do in the community.  Rather than come up with excuses as to why they happened, I’d like to give you a quick update on where we are with fixing them.

SEARCH RESULTS: We multiplied the indexing speed by 5X and I am pleased to report that the entire site is now indexed.

REDIRECTS FROM OLD POSTS: There was a major issue with redirecting from old forum posts to new forum posts. This bug has also been addressed. If you use a bookmark to an old STN or Juice forum post you should be taken directly to that forum post on Connect.

FORUM FILTERS: There have been some bugs related to the display of products on the forum listing page. This has been fixed. If you go to the Forums area in “All Connect” and click on a product you will be taken to the Forum landing page for the community where that product belongs with the product filter correctly set.

FORUM DISPLAY ORDER: Forum posts are now sorted by most recent comment (with an option to sort by latest post if you wish).

SUBSCRIPTIONS AND NOTIFICATIONS: We added “My Content,” to the user menu in the top right of the site.  This will give you quick access to any content you have submitted with the number of replies.  In addition, we're working on adding “My Activity,” and “My Subscriptions” These should help you find content that you have subscribed to and adjust your subscriptions settings.  Much of this can be done today in the "profile" area, but it wasn't clear to many of you.

CREATE A NEW FORUM BUTTON: For some users the button to create a new forum post was not displaying. This bug has been fixed.

RSS FEEDS: RSS feeds are now available for every community and product. We still need to work on displaying this prominently on the page. In the meantime, click this link to find the RSS feed for your particular product.

NEW COMMENTS: Forum posts with new comments since your last visit now show up in bold.

TEXT SIZE: We’ve reduced the text size in the forum listing page. As I mentioned above, there are many additional bugs we are working on, this was just a status update on the bigger ones.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

In addition to bug fixes there are a lot of requests for additional functionality. We have 1.1 and 2.0 releases scheduled for the near future. Here are a few things we’re working on for the immediate future:

REPLY BEHAVIOR: As several of you have pointed out, replies to forum comments are not getting displayed properly. We are working to address this.

DESIGN: We’ve had several comments on font sizes, and page width. Our design team will be looking at all of these comments carefully and we will make adjustments to these based on your feedback.

RECENTLY VIEWED: We also plan to add a list of “recently viewed” threads and pages that will help you navigate around the site.

FASTER ACCESS TO CONTENT YOU SUBMITTED: While you can get to content you’ve submitted (and content you are tracking) through your profile page today, We are working to elevate that to make it easier to find.

SPEED: We're currently optimizing several pieces of code to speed up forum listing pages and other areas of the site.

Thanks again for your patience. I’ll keep you updated on our progress.

Peter,

The smaller font, fixed redirects and search fixes are a great first step and appreciated.

Beside speed screen width is a big one.  It's tough to go from viewing usenet groups in Google full screen to a skinny row of text here.  It would be great to see more than a small handful of posts for visual searching or to read lengthy articles.

Also I noticed the Subject line, if not filled out on replies copies the first few words of the body.  I personally don't see the need for a subject line on a reply but some people might.  Would is be possible to just blank it out if left empty?

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe, you can leave the subject line empty (like I did in this post) and the system will automatically grab the first few words of your post to display there.

Hope this helps.

Peter,

I read your post to indicate that old links are now working.  However when I do a search from the Symantec KB and look for related forum posts the links take me to the new front page, not the content I was seeking.

fyi: Link does not work

Joe - I think I understand what you are saying regarding the subject line.  If you didn't put one in you probably didn't want one.  We'll look into turning that "auto populate" behavior off.

Regarding the redirects, I thought we caught all the links, but looks like there are still a few redirects not working.  I'll look into it.

Joe, we truncate the display of URLs to 100 characters (the working part of the link still works, we just trim the display part so it's cleaner.) In your example above, you ask why this search results URL doesn't redirect:

http://entsearch.symantec.com/search?p=R&srid=S10%2d 2&lbc=symantec&w=pst%20move&url=https%3a%2f %2fforums%2esymantec%2ecom%2fsyment%2fboard%2fmessage %3fboard%2eid%3d106%26message%2eid%3d18970&rk=1& amp;uid=929416425&sid=2&ts=c2&rsc=IeMftD0gHTd QwzeF&ed=edn%5f50996&method=and&ed=edn%5 f50996&af=dtype%3aforum%20%20cat2%5fenterprisevault %3a50996%20%20cat1%3aenterprisevault&isort=score

I'm afraid we can't redirect a URL like this one. We are redirecting URLs to forum threads, boards and categories but not a search result URL like the example you've posted here. HTH, Kevin

Karthikeyan, Thanks for your feedback. We turned autosubscribe off because we were getting so many complaints from users that they were getting email notifications that they didn't consciously sign up for.

I'm sure -- through time -- we'll find a formula that works for a majority of our users.

Which community did you come from? STN? We should take a closer look at how notifications worked there and see if we can craft a solution here.

Karthikeyan, thanks for the follow-up post. If you go to your user profile page (the Profile link under the "Me" menu at the top of any page) and click the "Track" tab, you'll see a comprehensive list of both the posts you've initiated and those you've replied to. This list also shows how many comments have been added to the thread since you last visited it.

Look I was a big complainer when the Juice was turned off and we moved to Connect but the site is improving.  I've argued with ohzone a lot in regards to things, but I think the site is starting to improve.

Now if we could just get rid of the "blogs" section and make it make sense then it would be a great improvement.

still getting  "login to participate" even though I am obviously logged in.

One more item to add back in, would be a scale of voting, 1-5

Jonathan.  Great feedback.  I'm going to look into the login issue.  PM me if you see anything that would help us narrow down the cause (is it just on certain links, etc).  In addition, we're doing some tweaks to the voting system to bring it more inline with a 1-5 scale.

I'm glad you are starting to see improvements on the site.  I want to emphasize that we're working diligently to add new features and improve what's already here.

Forums are a big area of emphasis for us now.  We've taken the feedback presented here and are scoping out several additional changes.  In the next few weeks I'll be sharing the details with the community so you can let us know if we're on the right track. If you have specific feedback, feel free to PM me.  I'm adding everything I get to our development list for prioritization into future releases of Connect.

i beleive you can add an check box for autosubscribe where a user writes a comment, in this wat the users who want auto subscribe can work in a click and those who dont want autosubscribe will not check it.

there should be a master setting for subscription which will alert in daily/hourly/monthly basis. if a user wants he can over ride master settings for a particuler article/blog.

I think this section is quite handy. I started to use it, Not so much for everyone elses gain, but to record my own methods and downloads.

Anyway, I am finding my way around this site and apart from the grey, and screen width I rather like all your work. Nice to see an active group fixing problems pretty damn quickly.

Awesome.  Thanks for adding My Content back.  Now if logging in would redirect you back to the page your were on previously I'd be a happy camper, viewing unpublished content for approval is very annoying with out this.

If a forum post solves your problem please flag is as the solution

I found the Print button helpful in the previous portal (Juice). I believe that is a good enhancement to produce documentation starting from posts pubblished here.

Thanks

The juice had Blogs as well, and some people used them, but they were harder to find. I think blogs could be useful here and I've been thinking about doing one relating to SWV, but first Workspace Virtualization needs to be added as an exsiting product and not a legacy product (you cannot create new content for it).

If a forum post solves your problem please flag is as the solution

This new forum format sucks.  In fact, now that I've had time to use it a little more, it sucks even more than I had previously imagined.  Go back to the original format, or move on to something else.

Peter,

I must say, the site still needs much much work but I'm impressed on what you and your team have done so far since the release!  The look and feel seems a bit more comfortable and functionality seems to have increased.  Keep up the good work!  I know it takes a very long time for a site to finally mature.

Quick thought.  I was replying to a post earlier and noticed you can't really upload a script.  I ended up just pasting in the code but is this something you guys are looking at?

Also, I have determined the best search tool for your site is Ohzone in the chat room, she is the google to your site.  She might kill me for saying that.

Stay frosty!

I didn't use the old site all that much, so I can't remember much about it, but this new one isn't too bad - there are a couple of annoyances though, as have been mentioned before:

1. The comment editor is a bit hit and miss when it comes to formatting - when I try to put in numbers or bullet points, it just puts the cursor back up a line or two
2. I'd like to see more content on the screen, so a smaller font coupled with a wider centre frame
3. I wish the Forums would make up their minds - sometimes I click on the Forums tab and it comes up with records number 101-120, sometimes the most recent replies and other times the most recent posts

As you can see from my post above, I thought I'd removed the lines for the bullet points and numbering, but they must have crept in somewhere without being noticed - is this a new ploy of "Guerilla Formatting"?!

DR0701 - We did a security update on the rich text editor and it caused some errors.  We are fixing those today.  In addition, we will be adding a "fluid" page design that will put more content on the screen.  You can read about some of these enhancements by clicking here.

MtBiker - Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.  I'll look into turning on file attachments for comments.

I havent been on the symantec forums for a while but I use to solve 99% of my enterprise vault problems using these forums.
Now when I do a search for a specific error message I cannot search for enterpirse vault topics only. I get inundated with backup exec threads.

I think you are going to find that you will be pushing allot more people away from the forums and more support calls will be loged.

For example.
I have a customer who is getting an ev error cannot copy ...............: The file can not be accessed by the system.

If I did a search on the old system for first three threads would normally point me in the right direction to a solution.

However now when I search I have to search under the catergory backup and archiving.  The entire page except for one thread relates to backup exec.

Not impressed at all with this new system. For me its actually useless now.

I would like to make a recommendation that the search box have an advanced search function so that you can search in only particular forum categories (ex.: Backup Exec category with a search string of VMWare to get any postings in the Backup Exec forum that talk about VMWare)>
