Upgrading to Task Server SP1 or SP2

Jan 16, 2009 04:00 PM

Symantec has released Service Pack 2 (Build 6.0.1505) for Altiris Task Server and simliar to the previous release, this is a complete build of the solution and not an upgrade. The release notes can be found here. https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=44688&p=1 . What this means for existing Task Server customers is <moan> <groan> another uninstall/reinstall of any existing Task Servers </moan></groan>.

For those who are still on the original release of Task Server (6.0.1356), here is a heads up that might help with your rollout. Customers that are already on SP1 (6.0.1404) can safely ignore this tip.

One of the many files Task Server requires to function is named register.aspx. In the original relase, this file was installed to "program files\altiris\client task management\web\server\." When Sp1 was released, the location of this file changed. Beginning in Sp1, the file is now located at "program files\altiris\altiris agent\client task server\serverweb\"

The MSI used during the installation of the Sp1 files, when run on top of an existing non-SP1 install of Task Server will typically succeed, but there is no logic in the MSI to move the register.aspx to the new path. After the installation, the NS error logs might begin logging a "Filenotfoundexception" message.

The solution is straightfoward - copy the register.aspx to the new location and restart the Object Host Service, but it's something to watch out for.

After a painful upgrade experience from 6.0.1356 to 6.0.1404 where I was bit by this, I would recommend that if you are considering moving from any previous release, build your process to first uninstall any existing Task Server related components and let the "upgrade" be a fresh install.

Good luck and happy updating.
