Vista Compatible?

therefreshments's picture

Q:
I've been bothered with the idea of moving from XP to Vista. Especially since we are looking into implementing SVS very soon.

Has the Altiris team been looking into how well SVS is going to run on the new Windows OS, even with how much they have changed how it works?

I can't wait to get SVS in house, but I would hate to find out that we lose the functionality of SVS when we eventually move to Vista, because it is going to be a huge step for us into solving many application incompatibilities once we implement SVS.

Just a worried thought because sometimes -- even being a Sysadmin -- we can't always control what we buy and what software is placed on our systems (i.e. Vista) no matter what it breaks. Life I guess....

Hi therefreshments. Love your avatar.

SVS on Vista will actually be much better than SVS on XP. Microsoft has implemented a new filter driver architecture and new registry interfaces that will allow SVS to be even smaller and faster than it is now. Also, SVS's ability to eliminate file system and registry conflicts nicely complements Vista's "virtualization" feature of User Account Control to provide a complete solution for legacy applications.

Because of the new architecture, however, significant work is required to implement SVS on Vista. Vista and Vista-64 support are on the roadmap for our Lightning release next year.

Streaming Available?

I know Altiris has partnered with AppStream but will the new lightning release allow for streaming from Altiris itself? This is one benefit we are really looking for in our virutalization plans.

AppStream integration with Altiris architecture

Ref: "streaming from Altiris itself," Altiris does not have a streaming engine. Hence the partnership with AppStream. But if you mean a single point of administration and reporting, integration with the Altiris Software Resource Model, a single hierarchical distribution architecture, etc., etc... All of those integration points and more are being identified and discussed. Watch this space.

Excellent!

That sounds amazing that it will be faster on Vista. I don't doubt that the SVS team will be able to find an easy implementation for Vista by the time it's released. I think they just pushed the date back further. Thanks for all your hard work!

SVS on Vista - can we not just try it ?

Hi there,

I understand that there may be significant work to get SVS working 'correctly' on Vista, with new enhancements, etc, etc. However, since we're all just trying Vista out for the most part at this time, could Altiris not just give us a copy of SVS 2(.1?) that will at least install on Vista and then let us import our VSAs and see what happens ?

I have lots of different machines in my home lab and I'm running Vista on quite a few of them. Annoyingly, though, I have over 100 VSAs which I can't do anything with on Vista because I can't install SVS Admin. I can't believe that my VSA of FIFA 07 won't work on Vista via SVS just as it does on XP - but at this time, I can't even try it.

Please please recompile the setup program to at least run on Vista so that we can at least trash our dev boxes and possibly provide you with invaluable feedback at the same time. I accept that Altiris will take no responsibility for SVS ruining my OS !! ;-)

Cheers

XP to Vista

When we're upgrading from XP to Vista, should we uninstall SVS and reinstall it within Vista, or should we just upgrade straight to Vista with SVS intact?

XP to Vista

Well upgrading from XP to Vista is not a problem. SVS is running on my machine! The only problem was related finally to my VGA card... so be confident.
