Many organisations have successfully rolled out Virtual Vault as part of their end-user experience with Enterprise Vault.  Users will normally quite quickly become familiar with the interface presented in Outlook and will start to happily re-arrange items in it, perhaps far more readily than they did previously with PST files.  The question is:

What actually happens when a user drags and drops items between folders in Virtual Vault?

The answer is that the changes are processed the next time Virtual Vault synchronisation runs be it at a scheduled time or when the user clicks on the sychronisation button.  In detail what will be seen is the following sequence of events:

The synchronisation will start, and a slow will be obtained:

11/11/2013 11:16:03.786[2036][H]: HDR: Requesting page: Slot.aspx?ArchiveID=1A14BEF784CF2D94F88B73CDCA138D7DF1110000evserver&TimeOut=0

Then the synchronization point is obtained, which tracks how much synchronisation is needed:

11/11/2013 11:16:04.269[2036][H]: HDR: Requesting page: SyncPoint.aspx?Slot=b70b3739-28e4-410c-bc50-f1dea59b8c7f&ArchiveID=1A14BEF784CF2D94F88B73CDCA138D7DF1110000evserver&SyncPoint=508&SiteID=16194C25939C8BC4D964B922428BFAB571d10000evserver

Then a check is made of the folder hierarchy in the archive:

11/11/2013 11:16:04.269[2036][H]: HDR: Requesting page: SyncPoint.aspx?Slot=b70b3739-28e4-410c-bc50-f1dea59b8c7f&ArchiveID=1A14BEF784CF2D94F88B73CDCA138D7DF1110000evserver&SyncPoint=508&SiteID=16194C25939C8BC4D964B922428BFAB571d10000evserver

Then a request will be sent to update the archived item metadata - ie the location:

11/11/2013 11:16:04.555[2036][M]: HDR: Posting XML: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
<UpdateArchivedItemMetadata Slot='b70b3739-28e4-410c-bc50-f1dea59b8c7f' ArchiveId='1A14BEF784CF2D94F88B73CDCA138D7DF1110000evserver'>
<EVUpdatableMetadata Version="1"><Update><ItemsContainer Id="1A14BEF784CF2D94F88B73CDCA138D7DF1110000evserver"><Property Id="2" Value="1A9D0823237EECB42BE4C747DD32F5C221110000evserver"/><Items><Item SSID="201311114168208~201311111109380000~Z~70A08A78FE98F9BAF13F75D99BAD6771"/><Item SSID="201311114168208~201311111109460000~Z~70A08FADB88995530BA79CDD28E64431"/></Items></ItemsContainer></Update></EVUpdatableMetadata>
</UpdateArchivedItemMetadata>

In the example above, it shows the request being sent for 2 items that I moved.
