What the hell happened w/ rewards?

Aug 25, 2009 11:12 PM

Dear Symantec,

Sorry you blew it big time on this one.... I loved the rewards, I thought it was cool you could get lots of sweet stuff from connect.  But you all went and blew the one reason I posted on this site.  Now you've changed it to gift cards and did you announce it?

Not that I've seen.  I subscribe to the RSS feed for the main site, to the Endpoint M anagement Section, and also to the Security Section.  No announcement of this change.

Ever since the switch to Connect customers are asking what is going on with the site.  I have heard nothing but compliants on the site.  I've argued against them, I've fought for this site, when maybe it didn't deserve it.  Now you've gotten rid of rewards and are just giving away gift cards?

Why would I take part in the monitor solution pack contest for a chance to win 3,000 points worth of gift cards?  Why would I post articles and forum help and other things here for a gift card.  The rewards were cool.... I've cashed in for things here before and encouraged people to do so.

What other things will you change w/o notifying us?

There are ways to build a community and I'm sorry this is not it

 Well..if u are from US,Canada,Europe,China,India,Australia,Philipines...then it shouldn't matter...

I just got some points in my account that i ahve been waiting for and when i went to the rewards page i thought something was wrong. And I was right - soemone should have def let the users know about this in advance or at least gave a grace period. *sigh*

I am sure your presence in Symantec Connect will help many...as even on this core technical forum we have had too many questions about Licensing.. So after hearing from you it will became as a Whitepaper for the customers..

As an Indian User I would like to see rewards@webwise.com working still with some extra points for the request. As we have very little options here in india to get products online.

I like Amazon.com products more because those are more cheaper (almost 25% to 40%)  to some indian websites. so I would like to spend more points to get products  from amazon through webwise rather than paying 25% to 40% extra to some indian website which I hardly trust .

Hope Symantec acn Understand this and keep webwise

Sorry about the lack of communication on that change.
We should have handled it differently -- and will certainly do so the next time we make such a dramatic change to the system.

I only found out because one of my buddies finally had enough points to get an iPod Touch and he was shocked to see this change.

Hey Symantec, what about adding rewards so we can redeem points to take certification tests?  I know with the NS7 tests coming out soon, that would be a great way to help get more people certified.

Some kind of posting would have been nice to announce a fairly major change to "the rules" like that, particularly for items that were already in progress (not clear if items users had already requested before the change made it through or were cancelled/points refunded).

Aug 26, 2009 03:11 PM

Agreed Kyle,

I guess my frustration was that nothing was announced and even requested items are not being shipped.  Sorry to overreact but still think the quick switch was a joke.

...since now you can buy basically anything Amazon, ThinkGeek or the other current suppliers list.  As several people pointed out, in many cases the Reward points you would spend towards an item were out of sync with the actual cost in dollars (i.e. at last calculation, $1 = 6.6 reward points, $15/100 = .15 cents per point, $1/.15 = 6.6 points), so you might pay $75 for an external hard drive = ~500 reward points, but the Reward Point cost might be 600 Reward Points which was about $90.  So everyone wins.

I'd certainly rather have Amazon (or TG, or iTunes) GCs than nothing!

for the quick response.  i was taken back when i got an email saying my request for the FlipMini was rejected due to the change in policy.  Very disappointing and frustrating that such a change was made w/ no communication to the end users.  Not a good way to build community

Yes, the rewards program catalog has seen some changes recently. However, it has not decreased what you can receive for your rewards, it has actually increased it. Through the variety of gift cards offered (particularly Amazon) you can receive any of the items previously offered, and more!  And at the same rates.

The change was made strictly due to financial reasons. It's very expensive to ship items around the world. One example is the shipment of a $10 leatherman tool. After all the shipping, taxes and tariffs were paid, it cost us $75 to ship that small tool ... those are costs that are tough to justify, especially in these tough economic times. We had a couple of options:
  • Increase the cost of rewards across the board (which would have penalized all of our users).
  • Charge shipping back to the recipient (which would have penalized our non-US users).
  • Go to an electronic redemption model.

Hopefully, electronic redemption will work out for everyone. We will be adding more electronic redemptions for other international locations as quickly as we can. BTW, it came as a surprise to us too. Management came to us last Friday and said, "things must change -- today".

I already used the rewards a lot of times and last requests are only in Amazon.de certificates. So i'm fine with the new policy.
Especially the fact that they managed to do something for the India contributors who suffered in the impossibility to use the rewards section.

Sorry for all who misses the old rewards, but? You are also able to order all the awards at one of the Amazon sites.

Although I've never used the rewards (yet) I'll bet that the certificates are only valid for US / Canada... and the rest of the world "guckt in die Röhre".
Maybe it's only a mistake, and they are re-vamping the rewards?

Cheers

Phil
