What Internet Growth Means To User Experience
VeriSign CEO, Mark McLaughlin, recently did a blog post on Fortune where he refers to projections of 500 million more Internet users and 1.1 billion more Internet-enabled devices by 2013. Those are staggering numbers and could have far-reaching implications for - amongst other things - user experience across the World Wide Web and Website accessibility from varying user agents given that Websites have become such a critical part of our daily lives and the commercial world. From a competitive standpoint, design and usability of sites will probably become even more paramount in helping Websites to standout and gain a competitive edge. As his post points out, "84 million .com websites alone drive $400 billion in annual economic activity" and "one in five Americans report that losing Internet access for 24 hours would effectively shut down their work." Of the 84 million .com domains today, 11.9 million are business and e-commerce sites, 4.3 million are entertainment focused, 3.1 million are finance-related, and 1.8 million are about sports.

Interesting ranking of most .com domains by ZIP Code in the U.S.:
1. 10001 (Manhattan): 9,611
2. 95814 (Sacramento): 8,998
3. 90210 (Beverly Hills): 7,239
4. 94025 (Menlo Park): 6,674
Also, see a list in the latest Domain Name Industry Brief of some of the oldest currently registered .com domain names. Some of them you will recognize like Xerox, HP, IBM, Sun, Intel, ATT, and GE.
