What is the MAX size for a VSA?
Q:
I find myself building various VSAs with the size of 1 Gig+. Just wondering what the max size a VSA could be?
A:
Hi d0lemite. Thanks for the question.
We use standard ZIP compression in the SVS engine. There is no documented limit. A quick search on the WinZip site says something to the extent that, "it's far higher than you'll ever need to worry about".
Considering how broadly ZIP is used, I would guess, in this case, it's actually true.
More importantly
How long does it take to create a VSA of > 1 gig? How long to deploy it?
I created a VSA for the
I created a VSA for the Google Earth and cosidering all data the dimension is really a large file, initially was just few MB but now is growing very fast to reach 2 GB.
Hi @ll
Hi @ll
as far as I know about the zip format, there should be a limit of 2GB file sise. No WinZip nor FileZip is able to build or deal with files grater than this, so that should be the limit. Isn't it?

We use the ZIP 64-bit extensions
A few people have posted similar comments, morab. Sorry, I should have specified that we use the 64-bit extensions to ZIP, which WinZIP and most everyone else have supported for some time. You're all correct that the original ZIP spec had a file size limit (either 2GB or 4GB depending on the implementation). But that is history. Details here.
Not just a theory
I have personally seen an 18GB vsa file. So I know it's not just theoretical.
Yes, it took a long time to export and import but not any longer that it would have taken Windows to copy the same amount of data to or from a compressed folder (zip file).
I've made 4+ GB .vsa files
I've made 4+ GB .vsa files for games and there have been no problems.
Compress
Is there any way to compress the .vsa file more? I have a 4GB file that when delivered by SMS takes close to 5 hours, when the original install is 1 1/2 hours.
Stream the VSA
Have you considered streaming it with SVS Professional? Depending on the application, it could take less than a few minutes to stream rather than push with SMS.
Compressions settings of a VSA
There is a nice piece of art on the Juice that explains how to adjust compression.
Take a look at http://juice.altiris.com/tech-tip/92/changing-the-...
Streaming with SMS is always slower. SMS is not the fastest one.
A good solution is streaming with SVS pro. SVS pro only needs to stream 30%, and the user already can start the application. Meanwhile all the other parts are streamed in at demand.
Our own console that is now in Beta 2 imports very fast from network shares. More info will follow soon.
