In the article " Dumb Windows 7 upgrade chart sparks spat " by Gregg Keizer published on Computerworld, there are many comment about a chart Microsoft provided to a Wall Street Journal columnist.
This chart shows which versions of Windows and XP can be upgraded to Windows 7 without perform a "clean installation" , in other words a backup before the update and a restore to rebuild the user environment.

Doing an in-place upgrade is like sending a ship for refurbishment of the engines and control room, but leaving all the rust and barnacles untouched on the hull. You will never see the full performance of the new engines because the hull will be dragging through the water wasting energy every step of the way.
There is really no substitute for a complete overhaul - clean the hard disk completely of any old content, and start from scratch.
