With kind regards,

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who may have a project plan to share for a CMS 7 install. I've got a rough version, but looking for feedback from others. We currently only use Helpdesk 6 and DS 6.8 SP1. After every task is done, Software and Inventory solution are installed. We've got the servers built, Altiris Agent installed on every client system, we've got software policies, we've got software installs to go with the policies, systems are remediating, software portal is set up for users, we're doing patch management, we've got the SAN space, we've set up the network properly for software to be distributed, pcAnywhere in use. Assume all endpoints have the AClient already.
So, short version, a spreadsheet with time assigned to each task or each solution, broken down by resource, with a time estimate for each. Does not include Deployment Solution 6.9 SP3 or ServiceDesk 7, I'll post about that in the respective forums.

I am new to Workflow 7 and I would like to know how to use the DataGrid compponent in the Web Form editor. I am trying to set up a grid that will have 4 columns where data can be entered. I am unclear on how to set this up. I have taken a look at the help for the component and I am not sure how to select the data type. All the values in the rows for each column will be text values.

I'm working on creating a workflow project for Asset Moves and Disposals. Right now at the end, I've got a task for the workers assigned to the Asset Management queue to manually go in and change the Asset's Status to Disposed after all the prerequisite approvals in the Workflow are finished. I was wondering if anyone has tried to automate changing the Status of an Asset in Workflow or a SQL script. How would I go about doing this? Any pointers on the SQL I'd need to run would be welcome. Thanks!

I have some questions.
1. Can someone tell me at what point in the IncidentManagementProcess the system creates the Incident Number and puts that info in the database?
2. Also in SD.IncidentManagement can someone tell me how the subtask are created and get the .X subtask number for the main system?
3. I checked out the Service desk components, but couldn't find one for adding a task to an incident. If you know where this is can you tell me?
I'm trying to create some demo helpdesk stuff, but am have a hard time deciphering what the programmers were doing.
I'm very familiar with workflow, just having a hard time getting inside of how it's being used for the service desk.
Thanks

Hello,
I am looking for a script which will allow me to change a "retired" computer to "active" remotely. The script should take the computer name as a parameter.
I am using NS 6.0 Sp3 and Asset managemetn Solution 6.5.
I am not looking into doing it manually from the Altiris Console.
Thank you,
Peter

Hi,
I have a custom action "Run wisescript from Installed files" scheduled after InstallFinalize in Execute Immediate. This custom action calls an exe, which basically does a couple of things:
1. Gets registry keys and sets a few variables with the paths from the registry.
2. Runs a bat file, that takes an argument as the path retrieved from the registry.
Now, the issue is that the install runs fine when I run it from command line using msiexec /i "path to msi" /l*v c:\log.txt
But when I try running the install by double clicking the exe or msi, the install hangs at the Custom Action. I have put in a couple of display messages just to make sure it gets into various conditions. These message boxes dont et displayed at all when running the exe or msi directly but then work fine from cmd line.
I am not sure whats the problem here, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

ENVY: Wishing the environment was more flexible and dynamic than it is
Now that Windows 7 is upon us, a familiar dread is falling over IT managers around the world. Staff levels are often barely sufficient to support daily maintenance tasks, leaving an OS migration to mean many extra hours and restless nights. First comes application retesting in every conceivable combination (in multiple images), application license reconciling, and system and personality backups. Then come the expected weeks and months of helpdesk calls and lost productivity, as users discover the many additional ways that their systems and applications may become unstable or unusable. All of this anticipation leads to envy of a hypothetical flexible environment where applications migrate without a hitch, systems dynamically configure themselves to the logged in user, and there are no sleepless nights.
Today, dreams of a flexible, dynamic computing environment are becoming a...

Installed SD7 successfully with default settings (seems to be the safest way to install).
What is the process to change the password of admin@logicbase.com AFTER the installation?
As each user who can use google can quickly find out, what's the default password.

So after we reviewed the inventory rules in the last post, today we are going to look at the registry entries on the client that drive the various PMS inventory components and policies.
So let's look at an extract of some interesting registry keys (from my test systems):

I was unable to find within the support section whether Deploy Center can be installed on a Windows2008 Server.
When i use the CD hte option Ïnstall Deploy Center" does noet appeear within the menu.
On a Windows2003 it does appear and I am able to install it.
Is there a workaround or whitepaper how to install Deploy center on a W2008 Server. It would be very annoying if i had to setup a different deployment server.
Any help / suggestions are appreciated.

The Altiris Agent comminucates to its managing Notification Server through a set of interfaces available via http/https on the NS. But given the number of computers that a NS can manage at any given time the concurrency aspects of this communication stack are not always easy to understand.
Here is a diagram I created whilst troubleshooting some IIS communication error, with details of the software components and configuration items that are part of the communication stack on the server [click on the image to enlarge]:

Hello,
I am importing large amount of datas via the Data Connector 7.
Each time I click on the "test rule" button, the server actually "runs" the rule for real.
Has anybody encountered this behaviour?
Best regards,
David

Dear Sir/Madam,
We bought 15 HP T5540 Terminals last month. These terminals all run Windows CE 6.0.
The problem is that when we put the terminal on, it register’s itself on the Altiris Deployment Server, (which we reinstalled with DP6.9 SP3). The Deployment server then upgrades the Altiris Agent to version 6.9.430, and after that I cannot manage it anymore.
The strange thing is that when I remove the Agent installer from the Deployment server and reimage the Thin Client so it gets it’s default CE installation (Latest image from HP.com website) and default agent (6.9.274 I believe) it runs fine and I’m able to send it reboot requests etc.
(the Deployment server however keeps creating an Agent update task which cannot run because I moved the source files).
After I move back the source files the Agent get’s updated and I cannot manage it anymore.
Then I tried a terminal with CE 5.0, this is a T5530 because the T5540 doesn’t...

I captured a Windows XP image from a computer with an Intel Processor, and I can restore to all machines that I have that have Intel, and it completes just fine, even after win xp setup. However, if I restore to a computer that has AMD, it will complete the restore, but when I reboot to start windows on the fresh machine, it brings up a blue screen and then reboots, and continues this cycle, but the blue screen is not displayed but maybe a millisecond to where I cannot read anything. Can you please help with this?
Thanks,
Shawn.

In SWV 6.1 there is a feature called "Auto Run From Layer". It would be nice to have a similar global feature "Auto Run From Base" that defines processes that should never run from a layer or at least act as if they were started from the base.
An Example: right now when a user receives a mail (using virtualized mail software) containing a url to an installer and the user clicks this link, iexplorer.exe and ultimately even the installer when immediately run will run from this virtual layer. In many cases it is not the desired outcome to have this software installed in (the writable sublayer of) the layer.
"Auto Run from Base" would provide a way to deal with this problem.

I have built a lot of installers with this version of Wise but I've not built many requiring spanning media so I was hoping someone might tell me what I am missing.
I have to distribute my installer on CD-ROM and it is about 1 GB total volume.
Under Build Options/Media I selected Media Based Installation and in the drop down for media type I selected CD-ROM (650 MB).
I ended up with two files named XXSetup.exe and XXSetup.W02
When the installer gets to the end of installing the files on the first CD it hangs and them (sometimes) says the installation media is corrupt.
I am testing this on XP Home (SP3) and XP Pro (SP2).
If I make a single file installer everything works fine.
Does anyone have any hints?
Thanks

DS 6.9 SP2 (slowly moving to NS 7)
(One server running the DS software + PXE, as well as PXE running on the DHCP server as I wasn't able to get it to successfully run without the PXE services on the MS DHCP box.
Sometimes, I have noticed that when I schedule a job to a PC, and it reboots, the PC will fail to even see the PXE server.
I believe it gives the error PXE-E55: media test failure. It's weird because the PC is connected, and if I simply CTRL-ALT-DEL the PC when i see this, it will come up fine the next time around 100% of the time.
Could this be an issue with the PC? the Network? Switch?
Any ideas / suggestions about this?
Thanks!
