BE is 2012

operating system is win2008R2

There is a NAS. This NAS is working as a file server. It has around four shared folders, mapped on different client PCs with read/write mode. Clients save their data(.xls, .pdf, .docx, etc ) on this map NAS drive. I want to map these NAS drives on BE2012 in read only mode and then want to take the backup. it is a good practic ? please advise.

Hi,

Mapped drives are not supported by Backup Exec as this is session-based.

Best bet would be to target the NAS shares (IP_Address\ShareName) instead, and you'd need a RAWS agent to comply with licensing requirements. You can confirm the licensing requirements with the licensing department or a reseller.

Thanks!

from BE2012 we point to the IP\share ?

...there should be no issues with this. You might get some sort of warning about a RAWS agent not being present, but the backups should run against it.

Thanks!

I have seen this technote. Now this mean that be2012 is fully supported for NAS

You would need 1 AWS (Agent for Windows System) licence per NAS to backup the NAS.

This only means that you can now start backing up the data from Backup Exec.

Please refer to the Backup Exec 2012 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to see if your NAS box is officially supported.

There is no need to check the HCL because the user is backing up FROM the NAS and not backing TO the NAS.

Its a NAS built-in on Linux so I think we need Agent for Linux. is nt it ?

Thanks all

If you are not loading RALUS on the NAS or the NAS has a built-in RALUS, you can still buy a AWS licence because you would not be loading either AWS/RALUS on the NAS.  The AWS licence is to meet licencing terms and you would be backing up the data on the NAS using CIFS shares.
