DLC (Data Layer Creation) Tool
Updated: 29 Jul 2010 | 1 comment
Updated with new layer management options: Here's a very cool utility we received from Altiris engineer Jared Payne. The utility creates a data layer for a specified application based on the file types associated with that application.
Details
DLC looks in an application layer's registry and determines which file types are associated with the application, and then adds the associated file types as capture items in the data layer. If the data layer does not exist, DLC will create the layer for you.
Use:
DLC <DataLayerName|GUID> <list of (LayerNames|GUIDs) > [FLAGS]
| Flags | |
| -F | Force the template layer to deactivate, will reactivate if it was active |
Examples:
DLC Foo_DATALAYER Foo DLC ALL_DATALAYER * DLC MEDIA_DATALAYER Winamp Itune* "Rea? Player"
Warning
You still need to check the data capture list and make sure that you want all the items in the data capture list. Web browsers associate themselves with .html files but you may not want .html files to be in the data capture list.

Some newbie questions
I have begun testing with SVS for our move to Vista and need some help understanding the data layers. The DLC tool is pretty sweet.
1. Can I have one universal data layer for all virtual apps or is it best practice to create one for each app?
2. If I created a data layer for "My Documents" and then ones for each app. does that create duplicate files?
3.When a machine needs to be re-imaged and I have had the data layers set correctly where will the data be so we can transfer to new machine?
