FreeStaller makes it easy to install virtualized applications to any path or hard disk (instead of to the default c:\fslrdr\).

See also FreeImport

All New Layers are installed in the Default FileRedirect. ( e.g. c:\fslrdr\ )

With "FreeStaller" you can select the FileRedirect Path. (For a New Layer) ( e.g. d:\fslrdr\ )

How to use:

  1. First run "FreeStaller.exe"
    close FreeStaller
(Now we have a shortcut in "Sendto" Folder)
  2. Start "FreeStaller" by using the Sendto Menu
Make entries and click the install Button
    Ready

Features:

  • Flashing tray icon (indicates the Capture process)
  • Derives the new layer name from the *.exe File
  • Activate on Start Option

Question?

Using this program could you potientially install every layer to a different drive/location?

For instance, could you have some layers running in the default location, some layers running from a different physical hard drive on the computer, and some layers running off of a network drive?

Thanks,

-trb48

Working...

I once installed a BIG program on another location by :

- Changing this location in registry to point to another:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Altiris\FSL\DefaultFileRedirect

- Installing program in layer

- Restoring the original registry.

Does this app automate the same... or does it do it differently?

Thanks

Redirecting

This tool is a good way to redircet layers.
if you have lots of layers, it can be difficult to remember where the layers are located if you have over 4 or 5 drives.

Freestall also working with archives?

What happens in the following scenario:

1. Freestall an application redirected to D:\fslrdr.
2. Export the package to an archive.
3. Import the archive after I reinstalled the system or on a second system.

Did the redirection to D:\fslrdr survive export/import of an archive?

If used the same way

I've not tested it, but if you use this tool the same way for importing a VSA also, then yes, it should install to the new location.

The VSA doesn't hold the host's original folder location anywhere AFAIK, so on a system where FreeStaller isn't used, it'd extract files to its default location.
